Pat Ross is a modest man who easily acknowledges that his business is not the largest party rental company in San Antonio. "I'm not the king of anything," laughs Ross, owner of Classic Party Rentals. What he is, however, is a man who knows the rental industry and knows how to please his customers. Ross uses the relatively small size of his business to add a personal element to all his transactions. "I have a business that's more friendly than the others," he said. "We strive for customer satisfaction, and I think my small size gives me the ability to give more personal service." Part of this is remembering that his clients have very different needs and budgets, and allowing them to make decisions. "I try to keep our prices low so that I don't burden the customers," he said. This includes keeping delivery, set-up and knockdown charges separate, in case the customer doesn't really need those services. "This way it can be variable from customer to customer." Aside from menu pricing, Classic Party Rentals also offers an enormous variety of items to rent. From candelabra and champagne fountains to the standard tables and chairs, the company lists its rental prices up-front so clients can easily comparison shop. Ross feels that an informed customer is an advantage. "They look at several different places and they'll call first. I think they do true shopping - they've done a great deal of thinking on it and they've done a lot of pricing," Ross said. Since his prices are fair and his staff is so friendly, he sees most clients return to Classic Party Rentals after comparison shopping. But even for customers who aren't sure what their needs will be, Ross can help. "I listen a lot. When you go shopping, you don't want the sales person giving you advice. But if you're stuck on a problem, you want them to give you a hand. I do the same thing," he said. "I've been to a number of the locations and I understand what's needed at each location. Because I've served numerous people, I can think of things they might rent that can make their event more pleasurable. Having experience is a big help as far as helping people." And whether he's renting gazebos, china, dance floors or coffeepots, Ross keeps his customers first in his mind. "The customer is number one. That means that we'll do everything in our power to satisfy their need or wants," he said. "I just want them to feel good. And feel like they've had a good time and enjoyed themselves. That's what a wedding is all about. It's a celebration."
