Day Spa at Folawn's

When Michele Castro steps into a massage room, she automatically lowers her voice. All around her are signs that this is a quiet place - a place to relax, meditate and slip into the peace that's palpable in this room. From the warm brown walls to the bamboo shades, it's clear that this place is far, far from the rushed world outside its walls.

Castro, the Special Events Coordinator for the Day Spa at Folawn's, is happy to give tours of this full-service salon and day spa. Moving quietly through the massage and body treatment rooms, she points out that each part of the salon and spa was decorated with the guest in mind.

By consulting a Feng-shui master and dividing the spa into three distinct areas - the bustling salon, the chatty pedicure and manicure rooms, and the secluded, peaceful massage rooms - the Day Spa at Folawn's is ideal for its guests.

"Everything is unique. Every inch of the facility has been carefully designed," said Terry Folawn, Owner of the spa. "We go from a very high pace in the front, to very serene in the back. For me, it was about taking a mini-vacation, being able to get away. So in the spa rooms, we have an interpretation of what an island getaway would be."

From tinkling fountains and soothing music to the scents of lavender that waft through the air, every element has been seen to. There's nothing here that doesn't relax, rejuvenate or refine the body and spirit.

But there is plenty that does. Folawn's, the largest full-service spa in San Antonio, offers 10 hairstylists and seven spa rooms. With 40 technicians, the salon performs professional facials, massages, pedicures and manicures, permanent cosmetics, body treatments and waxing, in addition to applying makeup.

All of these services are ideal for the bride-to-be as well as the bridal party and the mothers. Since Folawn's is a large spa, it can offer customized packages for parties up to 18 people. Castro coordinates these groups, making sure that everyone gets their treatments on time. Folawn believes that for the bride, this can be priceless.

"I've never met a bride that wasn't stressed by the time she got married," said Folawn. "I want this to be the one thing that makes them say, 'okay, I can do this.'"

Castro, who's the personal consultant for the parties and offers them wine, drinks and even lunch during their visit, enjoys the rapport she builds with guests. "It's a great service," she said. "What we offer is wonderful to everybody."

What makes it wonderful is the spa's pure relaxation. Even on her wedding day, the Day Spa at Folawn's can make sure the bride has a massage and facial, as well as her hair and makeup done, with enough time to sit down and enjoy the day.

But it's the sense of tranquility that makes Folawn's really special. "It's about relaxation. It's about them," said Folawn. "In today's society, everybody is so rushed and hurried. So to us, the word 'spa' means come in and be pampered and really get away. When you give the gift of relaxation, you give the best gift you can ever give someone."
