When Sue Vina talks about the Doubletree Hotel, the first thing and the last thing she mentions is the beauty of the facility. It speaks for itself, says Vina, the catering sales manager and wedding specialist for the Doubletree. Even as she offers guests packets of the hotel's famous chocolate chip cookies, she says it's the beauty of the place that really makes it spectacular. "What makes it beautiful? The tropical courtyard, the Spanish colonial architecture and design. There's just not much decorating you have to do. It's already done," she said. That beauty makes it an ideal spot for weddings and receptions, as evidenced by the large portrait on her wall of a bride posing in the hotel's courtyard. From the long reception hall that enters onto the patio to the ballroom, nestled under a portico, she lets her brides see the inherent beauty of the facility. Glancing up from the lush courtyard, it's easy to see why she does this. A sparkling swimming pool glistens at the center, quiet and unobtrusive with blue Mexican tile. Potted palms, hanging flower baskets and ferns make the space lush and cool. A stone fountain trickles under the shade of trees. All of this is surrounded by rising white stucco walls, doorways with colonial-style arches and the aura of another era. It is, simply, a combination of cool elegance and Texas warmth. Vina, who has hosted about 200 weddings at the Doubletree, has incorporated all-inclusive bridal packages into this setting. "The bride has very little work," she said. "We take care of all of that." The special packages, which include reception space, catering by Executive Chef Agustin Rivera, cake, flowers and decorations, are an easy way for the bride to get the most out of the Doubletree. Vina and Rivera head up a well coordinated banquet team, which offers white-glove service and delicious meals, including Rivera's sautéed filet of salmon and oven-grilled marinated prawns. The attentive service and delightful meals have given the Doubletree a citywide reputation for excellence. With accommodations for as many as 400 people, brides can choose from a sit down dinner, buffet, food stations or hors d'oeuvres. Every package also comes with a free room for the bride and groom the night of the wedding, along with chocolate-dipped strawberries and champagne and a free breakfast. One of the best elements of the package is Vina's service as coordinator. Her job, she says, is to make her customers happy. "We tailor each wedding to their own specifications. We do whatever it takes to make sure the customer is happy." After all the preparation for each wedding, she enjoys seeing the happy faces the most. "It's a fun occasion. It all has to do with creating a beautiful memory. At the end of the reception, I see the happy faces of the bride and groom. They appreciate all we've done to make the day special. They know they made the right choice.
