"My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary
in January. After I got married, I had a different appreciation for what
we do. . .and I feel that I and my employees express that appreciation
through the music we play." That's the personal touch Chris Koval,
owner of Future Sounds DJ Service, brings to the roughly 120 weddings
a year for which his company provides music - 40 of which he provides
personally.
Why
is music such an important part of a wedding? It creates an atmosphere
that fulfills the dreams of the bride, groom and their families. "Many
brides dream of the perfect wedding, and most 'hear' certain music in
the background. We help to create the desired atmosphere, while coordinating
the event to make sure it's a success, "Koval relates. That coordination
begins with discussing the evening with the couple prior to the reception
while the special evening's coordination includes working closely with
the evening's photographer, videographer and event coordinator as well
as providing announcements and "hosting" the event so the wedding
party and their guests can enjoy themselves.
Because every wedding is unique, it's important to
select a DJ that has a good variety of music. Future Sounds DJ's come
prepared for anything -- Koval says their music library consists of around
3500 compact discs. "Musically, we offer a little bit of everything,"
he states. "When a couple is in the middle of organizing their wedding,
it's sometimes hard to remember specific songs, so we carry a variety
of familiar tunes from the past as well as current songs from all genres."
Koval and wife Cheryl (who's also his business partner) may be newlyweds, but the experience they bring to their business is far from new. Koval has worked in the industry since 1993 and in radio for seven years prior to that. Experience is one thing he suggests brides look for in a DJ. "Some large companies have a lot of young employees," Koval says, "but experience is what matters. Many people are in the DJ business because they like to be in the spotlight, but that is not our function." Although finding a DJ with a relatable personality is important, he stresses that the bride and groom should be the focus of the event. "The DJ needs to be able to relate to a small number of guests or to a crowd that numbers over 1,000." Koval has a staff of five, including one husband and wife team and helps couples pair up with a DJ suitable to their tastes and needs.
Koval also suggests brides look for DJs with the proper
professional equipment. "Find out whether the tools they use are
reliable and of professional quality. I've made a major investment in
my equipment, so I'm confident it works."
Finally,
there's nothing like seeing a DJ in action to help you decide whether
he or she is the one for your event. Koval says people are more than welcome
to meet him at an event or at his office. Brides who have never seen him
at work are invited to drop by a wedding to see how the evening progresses.
A large percentage of his customers are referrals who have seen him at
an event; frequently brothers and sisters of brides and grooms use Future
Sounds for their own weddings. "It's very exciting to see the impact
I've had at an event," he says. Future Sounds is also referred by
many venues, photographers and other wedding professionals.
No matter the size of your wedding or the personalities
of you and your guests, music plays an important role. Koval sums it up
best. "Sometimes people come to dance; sometimes to listen. It's
important to find a DJ who can bring it all together to make your day
memorable."
