Spend some time on San Antonio's historic Riverwalk, and with a little help from your imagination, it's easy to make the comparison between the city's meandering canals and those of Venice. Italia Ristorante can take you one step closer to your Italian destination by adding a special ingredient to your wedding: the romance, color and fine dining of Italy.

"Very few places for weddings have access to the Riverwalk," says restaurateur Dale Wood, who opened Italia in 1989. "And we're proud to have been listed by Gourmet Award magazine in January 2001 as one of the 12 most romantic restaurants in Texas."

Located on the first floor of the historic Casino Club Building on the corner of Crockett and Presa Streets, the entire length of Italia's private dining room is lined with French doors with a balcony overlooking the Riverwalk. Inside, you and your wedding party will feel right at home amid the decor of old Italy, complete with multi-colored floors, relief walls and a grotto. For rehearsal dinners, Italia offers riverboat dining cruises that can accommodate up to 20 people per boat.

Location is important, but it's really the food at Italia Ristorante that will win you over. "We're an Italian restaurant with an extensive menu," emphasizes Wood. "We have our own bakery, a pasta bar that's to die for, and everything from pizza to steaks and fresh seafood." If you'd like to top off your event with a fabulous Italian cream wedding cake, Wood can make the arrangements. Lots of other desserts are available as well.

Italia Ristorante can seat up to 150 for dinner; an additional 50 people can be seated if the balcony is used. That space includes a dance floor.

"Unlike many other restaurants that accommodate weddings, Italia doesn't have a fixed room charge," Wood states. "We have a minimum food and beverage charge, and if that's met, there's no room charge." For a seated dinner with salad and service, entrees range from $18 to $30 per person; tax and tip are extra. Wood says weekend weddings need to be booked as early as possible because some times of year fill up more quickly than others. However, Italia still has some dates that can be booked as little as one month out.
