Linda Monk: Photography from the Heart

For Linda Monk and Lu Anne Gothia, wedding photography is not a job. It is a passion they approach with unbridled enthusiasm.

Both are successful professionals in other arenas: one as a middle school Vice Principal and the other as an Educational Diagnostician. Yet as a photography team, they are the perfect blend of charisma, humor, and easygoing charm that quickly calms even the most nervous of brides.

“Photography is something we love to do,” Linda says. “We’re not about high pressure tactics or selling because this is not our main job. In fact, if it’s not fun for us, we don’t want to do it.”

Linda first began her career as a photojournalist before going to work for a local school district. As she pursued her career endeavors in education, she and Lu Anne also photographed weddings and events for friends.

“We had so much fun covering weddings,” Linda explains. “We expected that, but what we didn’t expect was the numerous referrals we received as a result.”

Those referrals led to the establishment of Linda Monk Photography, with Linda and Lu Anne teaming as photographers. Linda Monk PhotographyLinda usually works as the main photographer using more traditional photography techniques, while Lu Anne uses black and white and digital photography to capture a more contemporary style.

“Our first objective, above all else, is to get to know our bride and her family,” Lu Anne explains. “Yes, we offer traditional, digital, and photojournalism style techniques, but not every bride wants or even understands all of those techniques. As photographers, we should give them what they want, and the only way to do that is to establish a good relationship with them.”

That relationship begins during the very first meeting with a bride and continues throughout the planning. “Not only do we want to meet the bride’s expectations, but we also want to meet both family’s expectations,” Lu Anne says. “We’ll usually sit down with a bride and do a mapping of both families so that we know who, what, when and where. We want to get to know everyone and discover what pictures and style are most significant to them.”

Most importantly, Linda says,Linda Monk Photography is the need to capture that “real personality smile.” “If a bride is not comfortable, her smile will reflect it,” she says. Our goal is to have established that comfort level before we even schedule the first photography session.”

And going that extra mile is the standard, not the exception, at Linda Monk Photography. They have photographed a bride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle as a gift to the groom’s family and also fulfilled another bride’s request for shots of her fishing in her wedding dress (as a gift to her groom). Moreover, as a gift to each couple, Linda and Lu Anne also develop a heartfelt video montage - set to music - of all of the engagement and bridal photographs.

“When we sell a photography package, we sell a package with complete service,” Linda explains. “This means we are always willing to accommodate what a couple wants. Their wedding photography should be about them – should tell their story.”

And no matter the “story” or the setting, couples can rest assured that with Linda Monk, wedding photography truly comes from the heart.
