When you enter the Pastry Garden, Lana greets you with a big smile and ushers you into a cake lover's paradise. Surrounding the room are five elegantly decorated wedding cakes - adorned with sugar roses and icing ribbons that make your mouth water with anticipation. At the table where you sit are albums full of even more spectacular cakes, and just as your stomach begins to growl, Lana returns with samples to taste that will have you begging for more.

"Our business involves the most important day of our clients' lives," Lana explains, "and we are in the business of making dreams come true."

Lana's business is definitely a labor of love. She and her husband Aron emigrated from Russia over 11 years ago and made their home here in San Antonio. Together they have built a business that thrives on the passion they invest in it.

"I am here everyday - 10 hours a day - to make sure all is running smoothly," Lana says. "I'm so involved with each wedding cake that once a mother of the bride asked me why I was so excited about her daughter's cake. I told her that each cake, for me, is like the first one, and I am so excited to be doing what I love."

That excitement is evident when Lana presents pictures of her cakes. Beautiful wedding cakes are poised over fountains or accented with colorful sugar tulips. Groom's cakes are made in the shapes of motorcycles or adorned with university logos surrounded by chocolate-covered strawberries. "We can copy any picture or simply work from a verbal description," Lana explains. "Many couples will bring in photographs, colors, designs or flowers to give us an idea of what they want. We can fulfill almost any fantasy."

Lana welcomes appointments or drop-ins, and both are offered tastes of her white and chocolate cakes. However, to taste her Italian crème, tres leches or German chocolate cakes, you will need an appointment. "The first appointment is really a tasting session for the couple," says Lana. "We want to show them what we can do as well as find out what they want. Overall, we want them to know that every penny they spend with us will be delicious."

Once the type and style of cake is agreed to, a last appointment is scheduled three weeks before the wedding to finalize any remaining details. Lana and Aron then handle the delivery and set-up of the cake on the wedding day. "I do not sleep the night before a wedding cake is delivered," Lana explains. "It is part of our job to worry about the cake so that the couple does not have to. We will team with the florist or whomever the couple requests to make sure the cake is set-up to their liking."

The Pastry Garden guarantees quality service no matter the size or the shape of the cake ordered. "Wedding cakes and groom's cakes make lasting impressions on guests," Lana says. "By working with us, couples will know that their cakes will look and taste beautiful."
