"As I was leaving for a trip, my wife gave me a camera and asked me to bring back some pictures," Vance explains. "I enjoyed it so much that I continued to take pictures of other trips and events. Sometimes I would leave the photos at the clinic for our staff to see, and eventually I was asked to photograph a friend's wedding." Thirteen years later, Vance owns and operates "Photoworks by Zachary," a highly successful studio specializing in artistic wedding imagery. He holds two degrees from the Professional Photographers of America, Inc. (PPA): Certified Professional Photographer and Master of Photography (one of the highest degrees awarded by PPA to recognize outstanding work). His awards include "Best Wedding Album" in Texas, "Best Wedding Photograph" in the Southwest, and the "Fuji Masterpiece Award" for wedding photography. All of this, and he still practices family medicine fulltime. "What you have to understand is that I already have a fulltime job," Vance explains in his soft voice that immediately puts one at ease. "Wedding photography is not something I must do to earn a living - it is something I choose to do because it fulfills me. It is truly my great passion - and I pour my heart and soul into it."
"I try to capture the flavor of the wedding as much as the actual events themselves," he says. "What people felt and their reactions are as much a part of the wedding as the vows and the first dance." Vance spends a great deal of time with a couple during their engagement and bridal portrait sessions to make sure he is cognizant of their expectations. "I try to tailor my work to their individual tastes," he says. "I want to know 'what looks good to them.' Do they prefer black and white, color, or both? Do they want a more formal approach to the pictures or a more candid quality? Most importantly, I want them to feel comfortable with me and with my work - and to have a good time." His attention to detail also extends to the packages and services he offers. Almost immediately after their weddings, couples can view their photographs via a password-protected page within his studio's Web site, which can also be shared with family and friends worldwide. Moreover, those family and friends can also order pictures directly through the Web site - freeing the newlyweds from managing a multitude of diverse orders themselves. "When couples come into the studio to begin designing their wedding album, I show them a multimedia slideshow of all of their images set to music," Vance explains. "I also put together a proposed layout of their album on the computer so that they have a solid starting point from which to begin their album design." No matter what a couple's preferences are, they will surely find Vance's enthusiasm for his work contagious and his photography exceptional. As he says, "I squeeze every ounce of my free time into my wedding photography - it is truly something I love."
