Expose the Heart | Pros to Know

A wedding photography business born of love? That seems like the ultimate key to success. And for David and Irene Castillo—a dynamic husband-and-wife photography duo today—their love was merely fledgling when they founded Expose the Heart. I got a chance to chat with Irene to get the story behind who they are as photographers and what makes their business tick. Check it out ♥

How did the company get its start? We like to think the company started when we met. When David and I first started dating, some of our first times out together were photo dates. Back then, we had film cameras and wouldn’t have an immediate image on the back of our camera to show us the moment we'd just captured. We would have to wait to develop the film, which provided another opportunity for another photo date. So as our photography business bloomed, so did our love for one another.

What is the inspiration behind your work? Love. It all really revolves around love. Our love for God, our love for each other, and our love for photography. Our company name has always been Expose The Heart. We created that name so we'd never forget why we do what we do and what our goal is—to capture the love in every image we take. It doesn’t matter if we are capturing naturescapes, people, or objects, we try to find the heart of the subject that is in front of our lens and expose it.

What’s your favorite part of the job? For Irene: The history we are documenting. Being a photographer makes me feel like a historian, in a way. We are with people in large and small settings, whether it's one person sitting vulnerably in front of my lens or a large group of hundreds. I get to see human interaction and relationships in very personal settings. Sitting in front a photographer's camera is not easy—it takes a lot of confidence, comfort, or sometimes persuasion to get in front of a camera. And once you are there, who knows what will come out. What I deliver to my clients are the images that take shape in my mind—how I see the client—their fashion, personality, emotion...their heart.

Some of our longtime clients and closest friends we met from capturing their weddings. We share such intimate moments with our clients that it really is inevitable, in most cases, that we grow a bond. We love watching our clients grow from two individuals into one couple and then getting to witness that love multiply as the years pass. It is one of the greatest joys we get to experience and share in.

What makes your photography unique—or what would you say is your style? Our photography is timeless and modern. Because we kick it old-school and come from the film days, we carry some timeless traits that your average photographer who has only shot and learned with a digital camera and equipment just won't understand. We see photography as an art form and it deserves the type of study and passion associated with creating art. We aren’t just clicking the trigger and hoping for something good. We are taking calculated steps to capture a moment we have been patiently waiting to see unfold with a trained eye. It is our talent to anticipate moments before they even happen.
