How To Be A Groomsman The Couple Will Love

To be a groomsman is an honor that comes with responsibilities. You and the rest of the entourage are to make the lovely couple’s lives easier by taking some of the wedding-related tasks off their plate. But don’t worry—it’s a lot more fun than it sounds.

Be prepared to spend on your own gear. A wedding can cost a small fortune at the least and every bit of help counts, so be prepared to chip in for your own tux, whether you're renting or going custom-made. This also includes the accessories: boutonnieres, sunglasses, and so on. Be sure to get fitted 2 to 4 months prior to the wedding to allow plenty of time to get your suit done—an especially crucial detail if the wedding falls anytime around the tailor's peak season. Don’t simply rely on the best man or the groom. Check on each other about whether you’ve all been fitted.

Mark all pre-wedding festivities on your calendar. You are one of the chosen few, so your presence at every event is important. Have the whole list marked on your calendar? Engagement party, co-ed shower, bachelor party, rehearsal dinner, and any additional activities the groom or couple are hosting—be there for the couple every step of the way up to the big day and take chivalry to the next level by volunteering to help with any little tasks. We can hear the couple's sigh of relief already. After all, what are friends for?

Help out with the bachelor party. The most-awaited of all pre-wedding parties for every groomsman is the one you get to be really hands-on in planning. Usually, the groom will decide on the place but the best man and groomsmen plan the accommodations, transportation, and activities. Take note of any suggestions the groom has and also have some crazy ideas on hand, but prioritize what will make this a party-of-a-lifetime for the groom!

Be useful on the wedding day. Familiarize yourself with the venue and provide necessary information when needed such as restroom and exit locations and even the schedule. Keep the groom relaxed with funny anecdotes. Good with words? Offer to help the best man with his speech, then prep him before he takes the mic. (Take note: the entourage is also in charge of prepping the newlyweds' farewell transportation, so have fun and decorate. It’s a good excuse to hang with the bridesmaids!)

A thoughtful wedding present beats an expensive one. You can buy a present separately or collaborate with the other groomsmen on one present that will leave the groom speechless. The former might allow you to offer a more personal gift, while the perk of the latter is a bigger budget—plus, it could be cool to plan and decide with the rest of the guys what to get the lucky groom.
