We are excited to introduce our newest licensed marriage and family therapist, Priscilla Rodriguez. Priscilla owns Modern Wellness Counseling and specializes in couples and individual therapy. Beginning January 2019, Priscilla will write monthly online articles on the latest topics in couples and individual counseling like How to Know if You Are Compatible with Someone and How to Manage Conflict. Be on the look out for her uplifting advice on our website in January and in our print magazine in July!
After earning her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Auburn University in 2015, she and her husband moved back to San Antonio. Once in Texas, this warm-hearted woman completed her 3,000 total work experience hours for her marriage therapy license at a foster care agency. In July 2016, she opened her private practice, offering services in both English and Spanish.
You’ll be tickled to know that Priscilla has an adorable love story herself. In middle school, she met her prince charming, and now husband, Patrick. They grew up together, attended high school and college together, and now they are enjoying married life together with their furry companion, Penny, a Bichon Frise.
Priscilla said that being a marriage counselor has affected her relationship for the better.
“I have learned a lot of self awareness,” she said. “It took some time to know when I was getting upset and how to communicate that with my partner. Knowing that it is ok to express yourself is also a part of the process. We have gotten to the point where we can tell each other ‘I had a long day and I’m acting this way because of this and this, not because of you.’”
Priscilla enlightened that when you get upset or have your differences with your partner, learning to communicate about it in an amicable way is key.
She enjoys researching the science behind helping couples, which is what essentially drew her to this career. She stressed that your relationship with your partner really affects your health, how you act at work and how you act in your community. Her goal is to help people get through this time in their lives and to see their lives grow and become more stable.
Priscilla’s counseling will help you answer relationship questions like ‘What do I do when my spouse and I have different views on a topic?’ or ‘What do I do if my spouse loses their job?’ It is her passion to connect with couples and understand their relationship, in order to provide them with the counseling they deserve for leading a healthy life together.
In October, Priscilla launched her online class called Relationship Wellness. This class teaches how love and relationships impact your physiology and how self care impacts your ability to interact with your partner.
“For couples that are in the pre-marital phase, setting themselves up for success by knowing these skills already puts them a step in the right direction,” she encouraged.
If you are getting married in Texas, the added bonus for taking this course is that you will receive a certificate you can take to the courthouse to save $60 on your marriage license and waive the 72-hour waiting period
Priscilla’s services include individual, pre-marital and couples’ counseling as well as online therapy sessions via video chat for convenience to those that live far away or have a busy schedule. Priscilla welcomes any questions from her readers via e-mail at Priscilla@ModernWellnessCounseling.com. She even offers a free, 20-minute consultation over the phone, so couples can get to know her and see if they will be a good fit for her services.
When she’s not giving helpful advice to couples, Priscilla and her husband enjoy exploring new restaurants, taking Penny on trail walks at parks, and continuing to earn her green thumb while she learns how to be a successful gardener.
“I’m excited to be sharing this information with couples as they get ready to plan their wedding and their marriage,” said Priscilla. “I would like to open up the invitation and let couples know that premarital counseling is a time to lay the foundation for a lasting and happy relationship. I want to encourage couples to feel free to reach out to me as they make this transition and to be on the look out for my upcoming articles and posts!”
