Between choosing a cake filling, creating a seating chart and deciding between ivory or champagne, some couples learn the hard way that planning a wedding isn’t quite a walk in the park. It takes a special kind of person to plan a magical wedding experience— a professional who’s poised, skilled, organized and pays attention to detail so that you don’t have to— a superhero of sorts. And for many in the San Antonio wedding industry, that person is Diana Boucher.
Diana Boucher of Weddings and Events by Diana Boucher, began her career in the wedding industry almost 29 years ago— years that, as she explains, seemed to fly by.
“I really didn’t know how many weddings I had completed,” says Diana. “I enjoy getting to know my couples. I enjoy the experiences we share so it was never a number I kept track of. But one day my daughters asked me so I got a little curious.”
Upon digging through her archive, Diana discovered that the number of weddings she’d completed since the onset of her career was much greater than she’d anticipated.
“I counted four times because I thought surely I made a mistake! I thought to myself, ‘there’s no way it could be that high,’ but after counting again and again, it was!”
After double, triple and quadruple checking her math, Diana realized that the couple she was working with at that moment would be her 500th couple!
“At the time I was planning Michelle and Drew’s wedding and they stood out to me because they were so incredibly in touch with each other. They were just phenomenal to work with so when I realized they were my 500th couple, I knew I wanted to surprise them with something big— commemorating these two very important milestones in our lives.”
The theme of Michelle and Drew’s wedding was a touch of elegance and southern charm, with the crisp white pillars and black shutters of Kendall Plantation providing the perfect backdrop for the day. Pops of baby blue, ivory and gold gave a clean sophisticated feel as every detail was to a t.
“To say that the wedding went without a hitch would be an understatement. I was blown away,” says Michelle. “Diana and her dream team took care of us, making sure that the day ran according to plan, making adjustments as needed, allowing my parents to focus on hosting— and for Drew and I to enjoy our special day without any worries.”
The happy couple and their guests enjoyed a decadent meal and an evening of laughter and dancing. But Diana had one last trick up her sleeve, surprising Michelle and Drew with the biggest treat of the night— a fireworks show.
“I wanted to surprise the bride and groom so I thought why not end the evening with a bang,” explains Diana.
Michelle and Drew soaked it all in, captivated by the marvelous display creating their first memory together as a married couple.
“Being Diana’s 500th wedding was a gift and a true joy. We were both able to be a part of a major milestone in one another’s lives— and to share that with Diana was a true honor.”
Diana, who’s now working on her 29th year in the business, explains that it’s the connections with her couples like Michelle and Drew that keep her going, and with no end in sight.
“For me a lot of it is seeing them years later— watching their lives and their families grow— it brings me joy.”
And with only four openings left for the year 2018 and new ventures into venue management, that joy will only continue to grow.
“You know it’s funny, years ago it was very difficult to get couples that have never been married before to understand what we do as wedding planners. And now we’re a line item of a budget! Couples realize that we’re a necessity and now my books and those of my friends fill up quicker than we ever imagined 20 or even 10 years ago.
“So I have a lot of gratitude— towards my couples, yes, but also towards the friends that I’ve made over the years— all of the vendors and event professionals. I feel so grateful to have been a part of the local industry and to see its growth— we’ve raised the local community to such a superior level and it’s been a great honor and pleasure to have been and to continue to be a part of that.”
