When Krystle Camargo was planning her San Antonio wedding, she found the perfect candidate for the very important job of flower girl: her grandpa, Jesus Vidales.
Krystle explains that she and her grandfather have had a special bond ever since she was a little girl.
"I’ve always been really close to him-- to both of my grandparents actually. So when my grandma passed away on Valentine's Day of 2012, I just knew from then that I didn’t want for him to be alone. He and I have always been close."
But the idea of having him be a part of her wedding as her "flower-pa" was definitly not on the top of her mind.
"I mean, I knew he'd be a big part of my day, but not like that. The idea actually came up when someone tagged me in something on Facebook," says Krystle, who as it turned out, didn't think it was such a bad idea.
"So I came to him and he said, ‘well yeah, I figured I’d be the ring bearer or the flower girl or something.’ And I'm just thinking, ‘wow, really?’ I had no idea!”
And when it came to the day of the wedding, her grandpa Jesus came dressed to the nines pulling white rose petals from his black Stingy Brim hat.
He was quite the showstopper...
“Everybody was laughing and crying because they know we have a close relationship. They all know we have a very special bond.”
As a matter of fact, Krystle explains the reason the couple chose their venue, La Orilla del Rio Ballroom, is because of its location in the heart of downtown and it's urban feel-- reminiscent of their travels together.
"We actually took my grandpa to New York in December 2014. That was when I knew that my husband— then boyfriend— would be my forever. Because he was just so great with my grandpa. He truly was wonderful."
Jesus, who just turned 96 years old, lives with Krystle and her husband, Antonio. And according to Krystle, they couldn't be happier!
"It meant the world to me to have my grandpa there, not just him but also as a presence of my grandmother-- he was there representing both of them."
"Seeing him and my grandmother married for 65 years is something that I find admirable, especially in this day and age. They were like my real life Notebook."
