The Local Bride: Tips on Finding the Gown

Hey y’all!

Kara here. The time has come to discuss something I had been putting off for a while now—my wedding dress. Let me explain.

I was hesitant to make the salon appointments for some time because…I felt the pressure. All of those hours I had spent watching ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ had built this image in my mind of how it was going to be. This was it – this was THE gown - the one that will be photographed forever. Talk about pressure. And being a curvy girl, I wasn’t expecting an easy road ahead of me.

But for fear of running out of time, I bit the bullet and made my first few appointments with local bridal salons in hopes of finding ‘the one.’ The first appointment I made was with local bridal boutique Bridal Galleria—and they were just fantastic to work with. (They even let me play around taking these photos while my group and I shopped!)

In my search for the dress, I stumbled upon a few ‘a-ha’ moments I’d like to share with other brides-to-be who are on the same journey as I am.

  • Go with an idea in mind
This means do your research ahead of time. I searched Pinterest and had a very basic idea of what I was looking for. Even if it’s just a general idea, anything helps and will save you time and energy. Your sales associate will thank you, too!

  • Limit the amount of people you bring to your appointment
I know this is a celebratory event, and a major one no doubt, but really think about having only important people there. I brought five: my mom, sister, grandma, aunt, and best friend. I don’t think I could handle anymore than that. Remember: the more people you have, the more opinions you’ll receive. Also, plan on telling the bridal salon how many people are in your group in advance, that way they have enough room and chairs for everyone.

Couldn't have done it without my Maid of Honor!
  • Be open
We all have that one friend who uses the old line “You never know until you try it on!” For me, that’s my mom, and moms are usually right. And in this case, mine was spot on. Everything looks SO different on the hanger than on your body. Be open to trying it on!

  • Enjoy yourself
Like I said, I was stressing so much before my appointments. Will they have dresses I like? Will they have dresses that fit me? What if I can’t find something I love? Don’t give in to negative thinking. The best piece of advice I can tell you is to have fun and savor these moments. They really do fly by.
Ready to head to the dressing room!

Above all, and forgive me for sounding totally cliché, remember this: you are going to look beautiful no matter what you wear. Don’t stress. Don’t overthink. And good luck!

So, did I find ‘the one?’ Stay tuned!

Until next time,

The Local Bride
