Rehearsed to Perfection

Sometimes it is all about the groom! Sue Paciocco, owner of Alamo Plants & Petals, is seeing a trend where the groom and his family are pulling out all the stops for the rehearsal dinner. “Because the rehearsal dinner is traditionally the groom’s family’s responsibility and they are not bombarded with wedding expenses, they want to honor the couple with a lovely party,” Sue explains.

Recently, the expert florist has been involved in creating elaborate and fun floral décor for several such events. “I’ve heard many times from the groom’s parents that they feel the rehearsal dinner gives them an opportunity to add a personal touch to the festivities without stepping on the bride’s toes.” This may mean including a unique aspect of the groom’s personality or a special family tradition.

One recent Alamo Plants & Petals client showcased the groom’s family ranch at the rehearsal dinner at The Southwest School of Art. “These clients wanted to incorporate a tribute to the family ranch their son grew up on, so we used antlers from their ranch and cacti to create arrangements and décor with a rustic flair that called attention to their theme.”

Another client decided to highlight the family’s Italian heritage, Sue remembers. “We combined beautiful flowers with grapevine and grapes as main features of their décor.”

She also points out that many local clients opt to focus on San Antonio’s, or even the great state of Texas’, rich history and culture. “One family had wedding guests coming from all over Texas, so we did a combination of centerpieces to reflect the state’s various regions. For East Texas, we used pinecones for a ‘piney woods’ look. West Texas included cacti, of course, and for South Texas, we used a mix of wildflowers. It turned out beautifully and was a fun surprise for everyone.”

Because the rehearsal dinner is typically smaller and more intimate, often with only a fraction of the wedding guests attending, it is a little easier to splurge on. “I worked with the mother-of-a-groom who didn’t have any daughters, so this was her chance to do something grand for her son. It was at The Argyle and her idea was to re-create the look and feel of a Flemish painting. We went all out with some of the most exquisite flowers and décor. It was stunning,” says Sue.

And since it is a party in honor of the groom, the décor and vibe can be completely different from the wedding. “Brides love the idea because it doesn’t preview any of their wedding day plans, but it provides a chance for everyone to let loose and enjoy themselves before the more formal event. Plus, most agree that the groom deserves his moment in the spotlight, too.”
