Melvin Obregon grew up at weddings. As a boy, his grandmother would take him to weddings and events as her dance partner. So he grew up with a love for music, a love for choreographed moves, and a deep appreciation for everything these special events represent—bringing people together and celebrating everything those families have done for their children—young and old.
As The Producer, that is what Melvin focuses on: giving not only his couples and Quinceañeras but their families a celebration they will never forget. As an event planner and coordinator as well as master of ceremonies, dance instructor, and choreographer, Melvin can quite literally handle your entire event. “My service never stops,” he says. “I am always there, always taking care of your wedding or quince. There is no time where I’m finished coordinating because if I’m not coordinating with the caterer or dealing with behind-the-scenes planning then I’m out on the dance floor making an announcement or entertaining your guests.” Melvin has spent his life in the event industry and has honed his innate knack for relating to people, and most importantly, making them feel comfortable and like they can trust him. “I create a bond with my clients. Teaching someone how to dance is more personal than just managing paperwork and contracts. My couples, quinces and parents have to be comfortable enough to allow me into their homes or to come into my studio. I know how to relate to my clients.”
The entertainment element is The Producer’s true niche, including the choreographed dances he can teach brides and grooms, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, bridesmaids, groomsmen, or entire wedding, quinceañera, or birthday parties. He’s found the waltz, sway, country two-step, merengue, and bachata are the most popular requests among couples, but Melvin can also teach and choreograph cumbia, guapango, tejano, folklorico, hip-hop, contemporary, kizomba, and salsa for his quinceañera and sweet sixteen courts. “My services are customized and catered to my clients, matching the dance style and complexity to the couple’s comfort level and abilities,” Melvin says. “Many times the bride and groom are nervous about dancing in public or the groom is shy or they’re both introverts or they don’t have any experience dancing. My choreography is flexible and adjustable, so instead of just moving back and forth, I might add a bob, bow, or sway—something very simple where the couple still shines. Or if I’m working with expert dancers, then I can personalize to them, too, with an extravagant showcase.” Either way—simple or outgoing—Melvin works with his clients so that they can give their guests the incredible gift of an even more personalized memory beyond the good food and fun photo booth.
“People shouldn’t limit themselves to only traditional entertainment,” says Melvin, who works closely with local entertainment company Lumen Events along with a number of other preferred San Antonio wedding and event vendors to ensure his couples have everything they could possibly want or need on their big day. "It’s a party, a celebration, and I love working with clients who want to be creative, unique, and interactive,” Melvin says. “With The Producer, it’s not just about the products and services. It’s about the journey to your wedding day. I work on choreography with you, I sit in your house, I practice steps with you, I talk about your special event, I build the anticipation so that you live for your your big day.”
