Emily Alexander & James Houston Simon
Hometowns: Houston, TX & New Iberia, LA
How did you meet? We met in 2013 after Houston's sister and I began working together for our sorority as consultants. I had just graduated from college in Seattle, Washington, and she from school in Baton Rouge, LA. If our paths hadn't crossed, Houston and I would've never met!
Tell us about the proposal. Houston asked me to marry him in February of 2017 before a Mardi Gras ball in south Louisiana. Houston flew my family in from Dallas to watch me say "yes" and then we celebrated at the Mardi Gras ball with all of our friends and family!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? The vision for the wedding was romantic, fifty shades of blush. I wanted a romantic and lush atmosphere, with various shades of blush and greenery to make the La Cantera setting feel classical yet elegant. Touches of gold were placed around the venue to maintain a timeless feel.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? La Cantera has always held a special place for my family. My grandparents are retired in San Antonio, and my parents were also married in Bexar county over 30 years ago. For many of our out-of-town guests, they knew La Cantera would serve as the perfect setting.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The ceremony featured a wooden cross, built by my uncle specifically for the wedding with wood was from a barn in Kentucky. The guests' place cards were their names in Calligraphy on preserved magnolia leaves, to pay homage to Houston's Louisiana home. The reception featured a cigar roller.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The floral arrangements were absolutely over the top and have been raved about by wedding attendees for the months to follow. Additionally, the dance floor was FULL with all guests from around the country dancing the night away. It was the best night of our lives.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Be flexible, be hopeful, be graceful and be grateful. There are so many amazing vendors in San Antonio and the greater surrounding area, who are there to take care of you. Enjoy the process and have fun through every step of the process!
