Emily Zinsmeyer and Alex Aleman
How did you meet? We have gone to school together since 6th grade and were in band together in high school - he was on the drumline and I was in the color guard. We were always just friends who had a lot of fun together, but we were both always in a relationship with someone else. A time finally came when we were single and Alex surprised me by asking me to our senior prom. We've been together ever since!
Tell us about the proposal: My family went to Disney World for Thanksgiving in 2016 and for Alex's birthday the two of us went to California Grill, which is a nice restaurant located on the top of one of the hotels on property. We watched the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from the outdoor rooftop viewing area and during the big finale Alex got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Alex actually picked our wedding colors while we were scrolling through Pinterest. We both agreed that maroon and navy would look really nice almost immediately. We are both huge Disney fans, so of course we wanted to incorporate that into our big day without being too 'in your face' about it. My mom helped out a lot by coming up with decorations and ideas that would use the Disney theme in a subtle way. Alex and I never wanted anything big and fancy, we wanted something pretty intimate, something very 'us'. At the end of the day we really just wanted to get married - and all the rest of the details would fall into place.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? We wanted to choose a venue that was in San Antonio because our entire families live here, as well as most of our friends. We found our photographer Dawn Elizabeth Studios at a wedding show and chose her because the pictures she displayed were so unique and captured a lot of candid and genuine moments. Riverside Catering was also at the expo and we chose Cindy because she made some really good comfort food, and in her own kitchen! We didn't want a fancy five course meal- we just wanted good food that everyone could enjoy. And HEB always does a great job with cake and flowers!
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Something that was very special to us was that one of our best friends, Zach Wooten, got ordained and married us. Zach has known Alex and I since middle school and it was so wonderful to hear him talk about us and then pronounce us husband and wife! I would also say that the subtle Disney additions to the wedding were pretty unique too. From the Mickey cufflinks to the harpist Nelda Etheredge playing A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes while I walked down the aisle, we tried to find any way we could to incorporate Disney into our big day.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The pictures came out amazing!! We were supposed to have the reception outside, but because it was so rainy we had to move it inside. But my mom and her helpers decorated the place to look amazing. I thought the pictures from inside wouldn't come out as well, but Dawn worked her magic and everything looked great! The venue was gorgeous, the decorations were gorgeous, everyone's hair and makeup turned out great and overall the entire thing turned out to be wonderful and better than I imagined. I didn't know that I could be happier or more in love that I already was, but that night proved me wrong!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Include your fiance in the planning! It was fun to go to the wedding expo with Alex and decide on all of our vendors together. The two of us did the majority of the planning as a couple and we were both really happy with how everything turned out. Also, don't stress out about all of the little details! You get to marry the love of your life and that is literally all that matters. Focus on what's really important - you get to be with your soul mate forever!
