Marquie & Ernest
How did you meet? Ernest and I met through my first cousin. It was actually a blind date that I did not want to go on, but she persisted on how she thought we would hit it off. I said I didn't need or want a boyfriend, but went on the date anyways. We went to the movies to see Nacho Libre and the rest is history!
Tell us about the proposal. We went skydiving. It was something that was on our bucket list, so I had no idea that he was going to propose. My sister actually joined us, so I did not think anything of it when my parents showed up. I still had no inkling on what was about to happen, so he jumped first, then my sister and I was last for the obvious reason. When I landed, he got down on one knee and asked ‘Will you marry me?’ I was in complete shock with my hands cupping my face as I teared up.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Halloween! It is my favorite holiday and we thought it would be fun to surprise everyone, by tricking them into coming for a Halloween party. To our delight, many people came in costume and were truly surprised by the outcome. A few of our guests said they suspected what the “party” was really for, but many were so thrilled to have joined us on our special day and glad that they RSVP'd!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? I loved the versatility of the tent layout at Retama. It had an outdoor space, which we were looking for just in case some of our guests wanted to get away from the music. We placed some games outside the tent for our guests. We also felt that prices on the packages are very affordable. What made it even better was the event coordinator, Maricela. She did an amazing job keeping in touch with me and updating me on the weather and on our budget.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The centerpieces that were made by my family and I, had white faux pumpkins with flowers in them, decorative white pumpkins with rhinestones and pearls, and wine bottles with melted candlesticks. Also, our Photo Booth was a hit with our guests. It was an all-digital one, so our guests immediately received their photos to their phones or e-mail!
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The lighting is what made the place pop. Retama has a lighting company they use and they did a great job complementing my wedding. The catering at Retama was delicious—our guests had the choice of pecan crusted chicken or beef medallions with salad, mashed potatoes and asparagus.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Do what fits you and your groom! Stay true to what it is that represents you two. It is so easy to get bogged down on what other family and friends suggest. Keep your suggestion circle small.
