Laura I Gonzales & Lawrence Gabriel San Roman
Hometowns: San Antonio
How did you meet? We initially met through an online dating website called "OkCupid" in early 2011. After messaging back and forth for a while, we decided to meet up in person and you could definitely say there were sparks. After a few times of meeting up and going out, life eventually got in the way and we lost contact for a bit, but we never forgot about one another and the chemistry we'd felt. We reconnected in 2012, and this time we focused on building a friendship. That eventually allowed us to build a deep and meaningful relationship.
Tell us about the proposal. It was a week before Christmas and Gabe had just gotten a really nice professional camera. He told me he wanted to go to University of Incarnate Word to take pictures of all the lights. We started the night by going out to dinner and then heading over to UIW. As we were looking at all the lights, I couldn’t help but say, “This is so romantic” over and over again. We were in a private area of the campus and Gabe asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told him I had no idea. But I started telling him about a student of mine who'd asked me when Gabe was going to propose. It was a perfect opportunity. He looked at me and pulled the ring out of his jacket pocket.
What inspired the design of your wedding? I had always dreamed of an outdoor wedding. There’s just something about being in nature with so much green around you that says romance.
How did you choose your venue and vendors? We began the wedding planning process by attending the Bridal Extravaganza, signing up on The Knot, Wedding Wire, and Thumbtack, and visiting San Antonio Weddings to find vendors who had excellent reviews and were within our budget. Once we found vendors who could potentially fit our wedding, we interviewed them to ensure we felt comfortable with them. Feeling comfortable was a big part of choosing our vendors.
What was the most trying part of the planning process? Who to invite and who not to invite. Unfortunately, weddings are expensive and that caused us to limit our guest list. Sometimes people understand that and sometimes they don’t. When they don’t, it causes some hurt feelings.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Our grand entrance was definitely unique. We decided to go with a basketball theme and play “Are you ready for this?” as our wedding party was introduced. We even high-fived each other. I also think the candy bar we had was unique. We had lots of candy from Mexico and that was a big hit with our guests.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The ceremony exceeded my expectations. Our officiant made the ceremony feel so personalized and he also added that spiritual element.
What are your favorite memories from the day? The whole day was awesome, from beginning to end. Although, our first look was one my favorite memories. It was a private moment between Gabe and I right before the wedding took place. That allowed me to feel calm and collected during the ceremony. Another favorite memory is the after-wedding party! We ended up going to Georges Keep in our wedding attire with some of our wedding party. It was nice walking into the bar and having people cheer for us.
What are your plans for the future? This is simple—to grow old together.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? My advice is to be sure to do your research. Look at reviews and ensure you feel comfortable with your vendors and you can trust them.
