Annie Oyanontaruk and Shuang Ouyang
How did you meet? Shuang and I met in pharmacy school and then we found out that we lived in the same apartment complex. Soon after offering to carpool with him, we decided to start dating and we've been together ever since.
Tell us about the proposal: Shuang wanted to be practical and offered me the gift of spousal health insurance. Naturally, I thought it was a joke and said no. He then embarked on a 3-month period of convincing me why marrying him was a good idea, beyond the practical reasons. I said yes, eventually!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? We wanted to have a relaxed, outdoor ceremony with a distinctive Texan flavor. After a trip to Big Bend National Park, we knew we wanted a venue that could complement the beauty of the surrounding natural environment with rustic creature comforts.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? The Oaks at Boerne exceeded all expectations with their stately barn flanked by the gorgeous, expansive oak grove. There's no better way to say, "welcome to a south Texas wedding!"
Box Street Social won our vote with few samplers & the promise of a whole pig roast.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The open fire cooking available for the guests to see, reinforcing the "backyard" feel that we wanted, including the whole pig roast. The Blum coffee bar was also excellent. With so many oaks lit up in the night, we just had to climb one as well.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Everything! Shuang even liked the kale! Paul and his assistant scouted out the high point on the venue property and Mike took us out there for some amazing sunset pictures.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? This goes for any couple planning a wedding: get to know your vendors on a personal level. I feel like our vendors were very receptive to what we wanted and we didn't feel pressured into having something we didn't absolutely want!
