Morgan Crossland and Griffin Kott
How did you meet? Griffin and I both unexpectedly moved to San Antonio after college. I started nursing school and Griffin got his first job at Oracle. My plan was to move back to Austin as soon as school was over, but in my third semester of nursing school I met Griffin. We both ended up at Wild West, a dancehall, and by the end of the night he asked me to dance. It was a pretty immediate connection, we went on a date a week later and I met his parents the following week. We were both from small towns in the hill country and had a lot of similar interests.
Tell us about the proposal: Family is really important to both of us, so naturally, Griffin made sure to include our families for our special day. It was Mother's Day last year, we were all supposed to go to lunch together to celebrate. On the way to lunch, Griffin turned onto his ranch and drove us up to the highest point on the ranch which overlooked the rest of the ranch. He had made this beautiful proposal site with flowers and a little table and chairs and champagne. I looked out onto the ranch and down below saw these huge wooden letters that said, "Will you marry me?" It was perfect, instant tears. He spent the time to carve those letters and paint them white. After we shared this moment alone, we went back to Griffin's house where both of our families were waiting. It was so special sharing that day with our favorite people.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite place to shop is Free People, a free spirited, bohemian clothing boutique. I feel I really wanted that style to come out at my wedding, from the dresses I chose to the flowers and decorations.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? Being from a small town, I wanted to stay true to my roots and find a country chic venue. Firefly Farm fit that description perfectly, mixing a beautiful barn and fields with chandeliers and the most precious outdoor chapel. The grooms lodge was by far the coolest place I have ever seen for the groom and groomsmen on wedding day. It had a pool table, tvs, a bar, plenty of beds, hilarious outdoor showers and grills to grill out on. There was also an amazing area for us girls to get ready and stay the night. They had four extra cabins where our family was able to stay the whole weekend. This was a major plus for us.
The easiest decision I made during wedding planning was to use Benjamin Garrett for our photographer. I have been in so many weddings that used him and he is phenomenal. Not only does he have beautiful pictures, he has a stellar personality and is so fun to work with. Martha Rosser had done my hair and makeup at a friends wedding and her products were flawless. No tears can ruin that makeup! I've been in about 10 weddings and never liked my make up as much as when she does it. Taboo is so fun!
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? We loved including an avocado bar, and so did our guests. That was a fun snack for our guests during cocktail hour. I also went with a long sleeve dress. So many guests commented on how elegant and unique the dress was. We served breakfast tacos as guests were leaving and boy was that appreciated! We also decided against doing a photo booth but we had lots of Polaroid cameras and a little book for people to put them in and it has been so fun to see the wedding through the eyes of our guests!
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Finding a venue that allowed the wedding party and our families to stay the whole weekend on site was hands down the best choice. It was so convenient for everyone and took the stress out of worrying where people are and when they need to be to the venue.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? We planned our wedding in 6 months and I highly recommend doing the same. Everything stays fun and exciting when you plan that quickly as opposed to a year or longer engagement. I also suggest looking at vendors locally before heading to big name places to shop. I bought my dress and bridesmaid dresses from Liv & Love Bridal and their selection was so unique and had the best customer service. I was glad I shopped local before making long road trips. I highly suggest using a wedding planner. Jasper Eisenberg did a great job for us and took a lot of the pressure off of us. You already have enough to think about on your wedding weekend!
