Beth Kilzer & Brett Ganz
How did you meet?
Beth: Stories don’t usually end well when they start with "we met at a bar," so I like to say we met through friends, and it happened to be at a bar. We were both at an alumni pub crawl for his alma mater, Texas A&M, and we ended up hanging out with a small group of friends most of the day. His genuine personality and quick wit had me smiling and laughing all afternoon.
Brett: On a Texas A&M alumni pub crawl, we had a circle of friends that overlapped, so at this particular event our paths crossed. We both had similar senses of humor that I believe made us right for one another. So after the event, we went out on some dates and things just continued to get better.
Tell us about the proposal.
Beth: Viva Las Vegas! Brett proposed in front of the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It was unexpected and so romantic. We were in town to see a concert with some friends, so when he whisked me away to see the fountains, I thought it was just an excuse to go to a nice dinner! What ended up happening was way better! During the middle of the fountain show, he got down on one knee, and I knew my life was changed forever.
Brett: It happened in Vegas at the Bellagio. We were going with a group of friends, and she, to my knowledge, had no idea. So when we got there I had to hurry her over to the fountains, telling her it was tradition for us to watch the water show and grab dinner. I had planned for a photographer to be there and he pretended like he was doing promotional shots, which as he took a few, I stepped back and got down on one knee. Thankfully she said yes, otherwise I may have gambled the ring away!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day?
Beth and Brett: We have both always loved the special feeling and excitement around Christmas and wanted that feeling to come through at our wedding. The cold weather is synonymous with the holidays and more conducive to everyone wearing suits and long dresses, so it helped add to the ambience as well.
How did you choose your venue and vendors
Beth and Brett: We knew right away we wanted to get married in the Hill Country sometime in the fall/winter. After researching several venues, we decided to check out Paniolo and a few other options in the Boerne area. Paniolo was our first stop, and it quickly became clear it would be a perfect venue for our winter wedding. We fell in love with the large outdoor areas and beautiful views. Once the venue was booked, we looked to our wedding planner for vendor recommendations. Andrew, Beth’s brother, also helped by providing lighting, DJ services, and decorations.
What was the most trying part of the planning process?
Beth: The most trying part, for me, was staying calm and collected on the wedding day. I wanted to soak everything in since people say the day goes by in a flash.
Brett: The venue being in another city had its hardships. We really could not just run over to the venue or meet impromptu with a vendor, so everything had to be planned in advance. All the credit goes to Beth and her mom, because Beth made all the trips to San Antonio and the two of them met with all the vendors. I helped where I could but they really did a great job of coordinating, not to mention, our wedding planner Melissa was absolutely amazing about recommending vendors and keeping our vision in the forefront as she planned the event.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding?
Beth and Brett: The most unique element was probably the after-party. We invited guests back into the reception area and transformed it into a karaoke bar! We hired a hot dog vendor for a midnight snack and sang, ate, and drank the night away! Our favorite karaoke performance was a rendition of “Hotel California” performed by our dads.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations?
Beth and Brett: We were overcome by the love and support of our friends and family. You don’t realize how much you are loved until everyone takes the time and money to be there on your big day. The reading of the vows was more significant to others than we expected. Between the two of us it was one of the most important and meaningful moments; however, we did not anticipate so many people coming up afterwards and commenting on them. Many people were very impressed and acted somewhat surprised we wrote our own vows.
What are your favorite memories from the day?
Beth: My favorite memory was reciting our vows to each other. It was so personal and made a big day feel intimate. I also have many special memories leading up to the big day—planning and making preparations with friends and family was such a fun part of the process.
Brett: The first time I saw Beth in her wedding dress because the anticipation is so built up the day of, as you cannot see the bride and everyone makes a point to keep you apart. So not only did she look ravishing, it was comforting just the two of us in a special moment alone, for a brief second we could enjoy everything. We did the first look in a tunnel of flowers, so just being the two of us helped ease some of the nervousness, especially before we took center stage.
What are your plans for the future?
Beth and Brett: We want kids in the near future, but before doing so, we would like to take one more significant trip together like Europe, Argentina, or Thailand.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding?
Beth and Brett: Get a wedding planner! It may seem like a big expense at the time, but the knowledge and experience a planner can bring is invaluable. Our wedding planner, Melissa with All in the Details, made the planning process enjoyable with fresh ideas and great vendor recommendations. She kept us on top of our to-do list and put just the right finishing touches on each item, including hand calligraphy to address each invitation.
