Dolores and John
How did you meet? A lifelong high school friend of mine is married to a fellow firefighter engineer and friend of John's from the San Antonio Fire Department. We both attended her birthday celebration, where we met. We didn't really connect until two months later at a downtown bar, where our mutual friends were out celebrating their anniversary.
Tell us about the proposal: John originally planned to propose on his birthday, but, with the ring burning a whole in his pocket, he proposed three days early.
One of our favorite things to do is sit at the table and talk about our day over dinner. On that day, insead of food and conversation, I got a beautiful and sincere proposal as he knelt on one knee. All he wanted for his birthday was my acceptance to be his wife.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? We both really like winter and dark colors. Midnight blue, silver and grey were perfect for us and went very well with the groom's and groomsmen's Class A uniforms, as well as the venue.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? The location of the venue was very important to us, as well as the amount and accessability of photo opportunities. John wanted a downtown venue and the Sheraton Gunter had the perfect mixture of history, elegance and modern flair we were looking for.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? One of the most unique elements of our wedding was the groom's cake, which was an exact replica of John's classic 1971 Dodge Dart. The car was also a major prop in our engagement photos. The license plates on the groom's cake were personalized with our wedding date and initials.
Another unique element of our wedding was our card box. It was customized by the groom himself to include our initials, as well as light and sirens that accented the firetruck. It was so much fun.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The food and overall catering was outstanding. The wait service was fast, curtious and attentive. The catering manager Tina Gonzales was amazing from our first meeting to the very end of our wedding. Everything went very smoothly and with the staff handling everything so well we were able to enjoy our special day to the fullest.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Take your time. Give yourselves plenty of time to plan and enjoy the process. Be patient with each other and don't worry about anything or anyone else. This is your special day and the focus of the day should be you as a couple.
