Elizabeth & Craig
How did you meet? Dogs have always been a huge part of mine and Craig’s life and we actually met many years ago when I was 15 and Craig was much older. My dad had our first yellow lab trained to bird hunt by Craig and his dad! My dad and I did a guided field hunt with Craig at his property in La Vernia—my dad tells the story of how I was enamored with Craig and thought he was so cute! It was only one meeting till many years later when we met as adults, working at Southwest Airlines. We are both flight attendants and were commuting at the time from San Antonio, where we lived, to Houston, where we worked. We struck up a conversation and were immediately struck by one another, but would only remain acquaintances until 13 years later when Craig would finally ask this old-fashioned girl out on a date while he was commuting home and I was working the flight. When I sat next to him to catch up, I was totally caught off guard when he asked me out and thought “what took you so long!"
Tell us about the proposal. We are very practical and simple people, so when we had a Portland, OR, overnight while working, I mentioned to Craig that we should go look at rings at the Jared’s next door to our hotel. Craig said if we were going to look we would probably be going home with a ring that day, and was I ready for that. To which I stated, “Well, we’d be crazy to not get the ring here in a tax-free city!” And save the money we did! When we got home, on a beautiful Hill Country evening with our dogs Kaia & Luna, Craig got down on one knee, pulled out my gorgeous platinum diamond anniversary band and asked me to share this life together and marry him! Of course, I cried and said YES!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Rustic meets Shabby Chic was our theme. We had antlers that Craig has collected for years from our land, mason jars with twine, tea lights, and for a little of my Latina flare, we had cascarones!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? The venue is the country club I grew up at and held so many memories, including my Sweet 16 Birthday Party! We wanted to get married under the Hll Country oak trees with our dogs standing beside us. The vendors I chose because I wanted to keep it simple and stay very local.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The two biggest elements of our wedding were family and simplicity! We had to have our dogs as the flower girls, so that drove a lot of the decisions. Kaia & Luna had beautiful, fresh flower collars. My sister was one of my vendors. My dad not only walked me down the aisle, but he married Craig and I as well! Another really unique element was Craig’s camo, Real Tree wedding band—an ode to our rustic theme!
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Yes, the way I ended up looking and feeling. I never in a million years thought I would look and feel that beautiful on my wedding day! My sister really set the tone for my calm demeanor by giving me a yoga session in the morning and making sure I soaked in a warm bath with bubbles and candles before I started getting ready. I felt so relaxed and overjoyed once I started hair and makeup! I highly recommend brides do yoga the morning of their wedding.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Keep it SIMPLE and enjoy the process! I think brides can tend to over plan and incorporate too many elements into their wedding day. Although those elements can be beautiful, they were really unnecessary for me. My focus was marrying Craig, not the wedding. I chose vendors that were local, full of quality and people that I trusted, so I didn’t have to worry about the little things. It’s good to have full confidence in your vendors/friends/family or whomever is helping you. My photographer is a pet photographer. I knew with Kaia & Luna I was going to need someone who understood animals and Janet has photographed them many times before! My designer/decorator was my crazy-talented aunt Renae who does the most incredible work on a simple budget. We gathered elements for the design concept from rustic things Craig and I love that we have around the ranch. My genius, makeup artist sister, who is a recovering Hollywood makeup artist, did my hair and makeup! I had two of my best dog mom friends be my dog wranglers for the day. My best friend kept it all together, acting as my wedding manager for the weekend!
