Frances + Anthony
How did you meet? We met on Match.com. After messaging for a week, we decided to meet in person at the Barnes and Noble at La Cantera. I was reading the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when he walked up and asked me "What ya reading?" We spent the rest of the evening walking around La Cantera and talking.
Tell us about the proposal. So we had planned a trip to Universal Studios to celebrate me surviving summer school and to see Harry Potter World. Right before the trip, he told me he was scared to ask my dad for my hand, so I had it set in my mind that he wasn't proposing anytime soon. During our first day in the park, we had just gotten off the Escape From Gringotts ride and he asked someone to take our picture. I was annoyed that he asked a dad waiting for his daughter to get off the ride, so I was griping and not being my usual pleasant self. He was smiling and took his sweet time. He looked at me and as he got down on one knee and said "You know I love you very much, Frances J'lynn Driffill. Will you be my wife?" I was so shocked I smacked him on the arm and said "Are you serious right now?" To which he replied "Yes, I'm serious." At that point, I noticed the ring he was holding was the one we had tried on for our one-year anniversary that I fell in love with, but thought cost too much. Every one around us started cheering and offering us free butter beer and to jump to the front of the line for the ride we had just been on. I was so shocked I just kept saying “no”. Thank goodness there is only pictures from him proposing and no video evidence!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? We are both very simple and love how rustic Happy H Ranch is on its own, so we stuck with simple. I love the combination of colors because they were still bright even in the fall and the coral really popped against the navy!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? My cousin had gotten married at Happy H Ranch, and given how many people we needed to invite (450), I knew it was the perfect spot. We did a walk-through with the owners and Anthony loved it, too. It's just so open and inviting. As for the vendors, Lisa was recommended to us by another photographer and after meeting her, we knew she was the perfect fit. Her style of photography is very natural and beautiful. Infinity Catering and Event Planning is owned by a dear family friend of ours, Patty Gonzalez, so we knew things would run smoothly and professionally. Vega's DJ Services were so comprehensive and put together! Creations Cakes has, by far, the best wedding cake I have ever had in my life. Their pricing and professionalism sealed the deal. Braid N' Hairpins was the best choice for hair and makeup when it came down to everything. Ronee is professional and talented! Mariachi Alma de Jalisco was a wonderful mariachi group that my parents picked out.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The beef jerky bar was by far the most unique element and people still comment on it whenever they see us! We also switched our first dances around. Anthony's mother passed away when he was young, so he opted to not do a mother-son dance. To ease some of that sadness, after the father-daughter dance, I danced with my dad first and then he handed me off to Anthony for our first dance. Another one of my favorite moments relates to one of my brothers being deployed at the time and not being able to make it home for my wedding. So, to lessen the sting of his absence just a little, we blew up selfies of him and put them on paint sticks for people to use as props all night. There are so many great photos with him in it that it really did make him not being there a little easier.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Ronee's preparedness for the morning of the wedding was spectacular. We were ready to head to the church long before we needed to be. So much so, that we had a good 30 minutes to just relax at the church. I was actually anxious because of it. I kept thinking we had to have forgotten something, but we didn't. She was just that prepared. Lisa's photography was everything I hoped for and more. We have so many wonderful pictures it's going to be hard to choose just 90 to put in an album. I loved every session we did with her from engagement to bridal to wedding. I even did a boudoir session with her and loved every minute of it. She makes me feel empowered and beautiful—exactly how you want to feel when you're being photographed. Happy H Ranch was phenomenal for a venue. The owner, Bud and Julie, were the best people to work with and we loved our chats with them.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Really take your time and plan for even the little details you want. Don't settle for less when it comes to these three things: photography, food and music. These are the areas you absolutely have to go all out for. It's what people remember the most at the end of the day. For the brides, don't stress when things go wrong the day of. Not if, when. So many little things happened and I just ignored them and kept having a great time. It's your day. Don't waste it being upset about things that are out of your control. Focus on the fact that you're marrying your best friend and take a minute to just stand back and look at everyone there celebrating your love. It's a priceless memory!
