How did you meet?
We met at work! I was a new nurse working in the ICU, and Aaron was doing his residency and taking overnight call shifts a few times a month. I remember feeling an instant attraction to him, though I didn't get the courage to ask him to do something outside of work for a few months -- post-shift breakfast at Magnolia Pancake House!
Tell us about the proposal:
The proposal didn't work out as Aaron had hoped, haha! We had been ring shopping so I knew it was coming, and unfortunately Aaron was working non-stop on a transplant rotation. I was home one day and signed for a package for him, and then got curious about the package. I did some sleuthing and realized it was the ring! Aaron's original plan was to propose on a hike at Lost Maples, but he was so busy we didn't have enough time to go out on a day trip there. He simply proposed one night at home, so we could start our journey as an engaged couple!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day?
We both loved the idea of having a small, elegant, beautiful, intimate wedding. I am from San Antonio, but Aaron has lived here for the last 7 years too, so we wanted to incorporate the Spanish culture of the area. We wanted to have our wedding on the riverwalk and really embrace the atmosphere of a San Antonio wedding. We had so many personal touches -- mariachis, churros, a personalized ceremony, untraditionally doing a cocktail hour before the ceremony -- that made our wedding day truly OURS.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did?
Rio Plaza was the perfect venue for us! They had so many items included -- bar, catering, mariachis, coordinator, centerpieces, EVERYTHING. It made it so convenient to have basically a one-stop shop for all our wedding needs. We also loved the Spanish-style decor influences and outdoor ceremony space. Christine was an amazing POC for planning. Our other biggest vendor was Edgar Vega. We fell in love with his photos over instagram, and have had such an amazing experience with him as our photographer. The photos from that day are so candid, genuine, and a true representation of all the love we felt that day. Not to mention getting our photos back insanely quickly! Other vendors we chose for personal connections and reasons to us as a couple.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding?
I may be biased, but EVERYTHING about our wedding was unique! We did a pre-ceremony cocktail hour where we got to socialize with our guests. We also kept our guest list small - we had 21 of our closest friends and family attend and wouldn't have it any other way. Everyone sat at one long table for dinner. Our wedding was perfectly intimate. I am Mexican, so of course we had to have mariachis perform! Aaron's favorite dessert is churros, so we had Honcho's cater for dessert! My mom also gifted us with a riverboat ride as our "getaway car" for after the reception. Our wedding felt so uniquely "us" in so many ways.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations?
Almost everything about our wedding exceeded my expectations! We tried to keep the wedding fairly low key with such a small guest count, and we didn't have a ton of pre-wedding events such as an engagement party, bachelor/ette parties, showers, etc. The entire day was so full of emotion and happiness and love. One of my favorite moments from the day was exiting the ceremony to "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)" by Natalie Cole. We walked down the aisle into our gorgeous cocktail room and spontaneously/unplanned just started dancing to the music. I love the photos from that moment of Aaron and I just smiling at each other. No one else existed except for us in that moment. I honestly had no idea people were even taking pictures at the time!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding?
Remember that this day is about YOU AND YOUR PARTNER! Don't get caught in the little details and trying to please everyone. Focus on what's important to you, and everything else will follow. Things will happen, things may not all go according to plan, but in the end nothing will be able to compare to all the love between you and your spouse.
