How did the two of you meet? It all started under the Brooklyn Bridge. Two months after I made an epic move to New York City, I met Anthony. Our first date was at an old Italian restaurant under the bridge. It was so magical, like out of a movie. With the sparkling lights of the city as our backdrop, we danced on the pier to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York."
How did Anthony propose? The proposal isn’t your typical romance story. It came out of nowhere amidst anger and frustration. It was December 12, 2012, and I was joyfully watching a horrible TV Christmas movie when Anthony decided to change the channel. Rightfully so, I was upset and changed it back to the movie. Anthony got mad and went upstairs and slammed the door. Thinking I would go to him, he got even more upset when I didn’t. He sat back on the couch and tried to apologize but in my stubbornness I ignored him and wouldn’t speak. Silence kills him, so he went downstairs in the basement. When he came back up, he got down on one knee in front of me. Just as I was about to kick him over, he pulled out a ring and asked the magic question, “Will you marry me?”
What three characteristics made you fall in love with Anthony? That Anthony is a musician who loves his craft—I knew I loved him when he played me Mariah Carey’s "We Belong Together" on guitar. That he is a take-charge kind of man who, no matter what happens in our lives, will take care of our family. And that he is a goofball—we laugh and joke about everything.
What three characteristics made him fall in love with you? Tonya is the sweetest and most patient person I have ever met. I also love that she calms me down and keeps me in the right mindset. Aside from her beauty, which I have to mention or she’ll punch me, she is a great artist. We both have a strong creative side that instantly connected us. The first time I saw her artwork I was blown away.
What inspired the design of your wedding? When I first moved to New York City, my cousin Tricia gave me a day planner titled “New York City: A Guide to Shopping." On the cover sits a Tiffany box in front of a black-and-white striped shopping bag on a gold background. I carried this book everywhere when I lived there. So when it was time to plan our wedding, I wanted to take it back to New York City. I got my inspiration from that book.
How did you decide on Plaza Lecea? I wanted a modern yet romantic venue, something that reminded me of New York City. I loved the big open windows and grand staircase.
What was it like working with your other local vendors? Everyone was amazing aside from a few setbacks that come with every wedding. The cake made me tear up it was so beautiful, and the food was amazing! Rocelyn at Ara Photography and her assistant were both so great with us. They were very professional and knew what they were doing.
What was the most trying part of the planning process? Planning a wedding from out of state was the most difficult aspect of the entire process. We live in Boston now and I had to have my cousins and sister take the lead on a lot of things. When I finally got to San Antonio at the end of June, I only had six weeks to pull it all together. Everything felt a little rushed and I wish I'd been able to enjoy myself more.
Did either of you have a bride/groomzilla moment? I hate to admit it but I had some bridezilla moments. Having to plan everything from afar made me extra nervous and anxious about how the wedding would turn out. Also as an artist, I felt the need to make everything myself—including the paper flowers, cake backdrop, flower arrangements, and a sweetheart table arch—which added another level of stress. On top of that I have a 5-month-old baby boy, Rocky! It was a lot but I wouldn’t change a thing. It was more beautiful than I ever imagined.
Anthony’s groomzilla moment occurred when trying to rent a guitar, since he didn’t bring his own from home. The one he ended up renting wasn’t good quality and he says he messed up his song at the wedding. But no one could tell!
What element of the wedding exceeded your expectations? I was so excited to see all the hard work come together. Everything I made actually looked great in the space. I had so many fears of my items looking homemade but I got so many compliments on everything!
What is your favorite memory from the day? My favorite memory was when Anthony played a song he wrote on guitar and dedicated it to me and our son. It was such a beautiful moment and I’m so glad my family finally got to see him play.
What is Anthony’s favorite memory? Anthony’s father gave the blessing before dinner and got very emotional when he blessed both our families. Anthony still gets choked up over this moment every time we watch the wedding video. Ryan Bazan did an amazing job filming.
If you’d been a guest attending your wedding, how would you describe it? It was like an old Hollywood, glitz-and-glam wedding. Hints of Tiffany, Chanel, and New York City were everywhere—it was so pretty!
Besides marrying the love of your life, what was the most important part of the day? Just being able to have a wedding was such a blessing. Anthony and I eloped two years ago. We were planning to have a real wedding back then when our daughter passed away due to preterm labor. It was such a traumatic experience that I never thought we would be able to have a wedding. My cousins Tricia and Missy were so generous and offered to help with our dream wedding. This day would not have happened without them and I cannot thank them enough.
What are your plans for the future? Hoping to have my little girl, visit our spot under the Brooklyn Bridge as much as possible, and to live happily ever after.
