Ashley Bedsole & Carson Rabb
Hometowns: Dallas & San Antonio
How did you meet? Carson and I met our sophomore year of college at The University of Texas through some mutual friends. It was a “Spring Halloween” themed party; he was dressed as a UT basketball player, and I was Lisa from Tool Time. Over my overalls, I wore a “tool belt” made up of my roommates’ waitressing apron and the 5 tools that we had in our apartment.
After 2 1/2 years of movie date nights, hikes at the Green Belt, sorority/fraternity date dashes, and many late nights spent studying at the McCombs School of Business, we were finally set to graduate from the best university in Texas. After graduation, I spent a year in Dallas where I began my career as a CPA before transferring down to good ole San Antonio where Carson was working as a production engineer.
Tell us about the proposal. Carson and I planned a quick trip down to the beach for the weekend at the beginning of May. He got us a nice suite at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi and the plan was to drive down to Port Aransas to get a little beach time. When I walked into the suite on Saturday morning, there were rose petals everywhere. I was immediately taken aback, and at first I thought this might be an early birthday celebration. I followed the rose petals to the back of the suite where Carson was standing in front of a spread of flowers, champagne, and what I thought was a framed picture of us. He had opened all the windows, so behind him was a beautiful view of the sun rising over the ocean. After what felt like forever, I finally made my way all the way over to where he was standing, and noticed that what I thought was a framed picture was actually a picture book he had made. The book chronicled our relationship from the very start, and when I got to the last page, he got down on one knee and proposed!
We called our parents and siblings right after, and then decided we wanted to enjoy the moment for ourselves before making any other announcements. Carson had already reserved tickets to the aquarium where we got to pet stingrays (awesome) and see some cool fish. Afterwards, we made our way down to the beach for a little relaxation, before enjoying an amazing dinner at Republic of Texas. The whole day felt like a dream.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? When I started planning, I thought the theme would derive from one of my favorite books, The Great Gatsby. However, as I started going through the process, it turned into more of a mix of Old Hollywood with some elements of Gatsby. The wedding date was also during the beginning of the Christmas season, so I wanted my colors to complement the decorations that would already be up in the venue.
How did you choose your venue and vendors? Our wedding planner, Lisa Morales of Haute Weddings, helped us tremendously with vendor selection. She would provide me with a couple of recommendations for each service and let me make the final decision. We “interviewed” multiple reception venues, photographers, and florists, and ultimately went with the vendors we thought suited our style best. As soon as we stepped inside The St. Anthony Hotel, we knew we found our reception venue. It had everything we wanted – a Methodist church right next door, a gorgeous ballroom, and the food was delicious. Wendy Haralson with The St. Anthony was a pleasure to work with!
What was the most trying part of the planning process? Trying to plan a wedding during tax busy season! I’m a very detail oriented person, so I wanted to be involved in every step of the planning process, which proved difficult when putting in long hours at work.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Popcorn bar! My family is a popcorn family. We just love it. One of my first dates with Carson was a movie date where he came over and we watched a 90s classic, 3 Ninjas. When making popcorn for the movie, Carson mixed it up by adding peanut M&Ms, something he claims he’s been doing since he was a kid. I loved the addition, and now we always add something a little sweet whenever we get popcorn at the movies. For the wedding, we got tons of delicious flavors from The Popcorn Place, as well as a variety of M&Ms. Haute Weddings made a beautiful display of the treats for our guests.
Infinity Video & Photo also set up an interview station where guests could drop by and film a quick wedding wish for Carson and myself. It was so great to watch all these back after the wedding, and we even got to see one of Carson’s friends lay out an original beatbox for us.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The band was awesome. I read their reviews online beforehand, but they exceeded my expectations ten-fold. The dance floor was packed the whole night, and their talent was undeniable. I had so many guests ask me about them after the wedding!
What are your favorite memories from the day? Seeing Carson as I was walking down the aisle is my favorite memory. I wasn’t nervous until I saw all the people in the sanctuary, but Carson kept me calm and collected at the altar. It was also really special to see all of the months of planning come together at The St. Anthony, and to be there with all of our friends and family. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience to have everyone together for such a joyous occasion.
What are your plans for the future? Carson and I plan to enjoy newlywed life!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Have fun with it! San Antonio is very much a destination city for many out of town guests who have never visited before. We liked having all of our wedding events in the downtown area because it gave our guests a chance to check out the Alamo, Riverwalk, and great restaurants in the Pearl and Southtown areas.
