Melani + Orlando
How did you meet? Orlando and I met when we were at UTSA. We were both cheerleaders in college and, although we were on different teams, we always saw each other around. I always say it was destined to happen. Before we had met, we had a few times that we were so close to meeting but something always kept it from happening. Once we finally met each other, I knew I was going to fall for him.
Tell us about the proposal. When Orlando proposed, I had no idea it was going to happen! The surprise was honestly the best part. We were moving to Cleveland, Ohio, for his medical school. One weekend, he was being presented with his white coat, so we invited all of our family to attend because I wanted to make the weekend all about him and the amazing accomplishment he had made. After the ceremony, we went to dinner and he turned to me and asked if he should give a speech. Of course I said yes. I thought it polite for him to thank everyone who traveled so far to be here. When he was speaking, he turned and started talking about me—I was in awe. I knew where it was leading and I couldn't believe it was happening! I said "absolutely!" I did not even have to think or look at the ring. I had known since the beginning he was the one for me.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Moving to Cleveland and experiencing the winter snow for the first time inspired our colors. We love how the greenery stands out so much against the beautiful, white snow. Bringing this back to San Antonio was a challenge, but seeing Kendall Plantation with the bright white building reminded us of the white snow after it first falls, which was one more thing we love about the venue.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? We chose our vendors mostly for the experience. We haven't had a wedding in either of our families for a long time. Each vendor was something that we thought would bring the fun out and create lasting memories, but also something that would bring our image together. The most important factor to us was the memories we would make and how we would remember the night.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? The weather was the most unique factor of our wedding. We definitely did not plan it, but the cold followed us from Cleveland that day! We had 40-degree weather with 12 mph winds. Each guest experienced the cold, crisp air, but with a warm heart full of love.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Honestly, the day itself exceeded all of our expectations. Before the wedding day, I always heard horror stories how something will go wrong on our wedding day. That was not the case at all. We did not have any issues and thanks to Amanda at Blume Haus the day felt like a breeze! Orlando and I were so pleased with our wedding day and have so many amazing memories from the entire week.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? It's 10 times easier when you live in the same time you are getting married in! We technically had a destination wedding because I was planning from our home in Cleveland at the time. All of our family, however, lives in San Antonio, so we wanted it to be in our hometown. My advice is to accept the help everyone offers you. I know getting different opinions can be overwhelming, but honestly the most memorable moments during the planning was being able to do it with my family and friends. It's the little moments in the planning process that I miss the most.
