Virginia Mendez Garcia & Edward S. Solis
Hometown: San Antonio
How did you meet? We met in high school but didn’t start dating until college. Our love evolved slowly from friendship to ultimately husband and wife. We were next to each other through some of our best and toughest moments. Falling in love with your best friend is an amazing feeling!
Tell us about the proposal. Virginia threw me a “surprise” 30th birthday party. Little did she know that I knew about the whole thing (with some help from my brother). I proposed at the party in front of our family and friends and confessed to her that the “surprise” was actually our engagement party.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Growing up in San Antonio, we knew we wanted the beauty of the city to play a role in our wedding. The date itself led to a New Year’s Eve themed wedding with simple elegance to celebrate a new beginning.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? We chose the Hilton Palacio del Rio because the idea of celebrating in the heart of downtown as the Tower of Americas lit up the night with fireworks seemed like the perfect backdrop. A number of our vendors were family friends that we trusted with our special day.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? We are both film geeks so we prepared a special dance inspired from one of our favorite movies for our guests. Halfway through our reception, we put on sombreros and recreated the “My Little Buttercup” dance from The Three Amigos. It’s a moment we will never forget!
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Our vendors and the Hilton Palacio Del Rio staff were amazing. Everyone contributed to making our night an unforgettable experience. Our DJ not only provided the perfect soundtrack for our evening, but also had a playful and lighthearted persona that matched our personalities as a couple.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Bridal shows are a great start to meeting talented vendors and beautiful venues. Ultimately, don’t be afraid to express your dreams for your wedding when speaking to vendors. Being up front with what you envision will make things go a lot smoother.
