Erin Kelly & Cole Doherty
How did you meet? As fate would have it, a big city girl living in California somehow ended up in small-town Brenham, Texas at Blinn College. Cole, also a big city guy from just outside of Austin, received a baseball scholarship to play at Blinn. We coincidentally ended up in the same freshman English class when we were 19 years old and we both agree it was love at first sight. After seeing each other every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the first few weeks of the semester and being paired up for a group project, he asked me out on our first date and we both just knew!
Tell us about the proposal. After our 2 years at Blinn, Cole decided to continue his baseball career in Portland, Oregon (which is where my parents were living at the time). So Cole and I moved to the gorgeous Pacific Northwest, and then on July 5th, 2016, he popped the question! He’d just gotten back from a huge job interview in Kansas City and we had plans to go out to a nice dinner to celebrate the new job (or so I thought!) He told me had made reservations at our favorite restaurant and would pick me up—I was completely unsuspecting (I know everyone says that, but I truly thought we were celebrating his new job). After I finished getting ready and was waiting for him to pick me up, there was a knock on the door so I opened it to find a white limo, filled with roses, a hand written love letter, and a John Mayer CD playing (our first concert together). I was speechless! The driver drove up a gorgeous tree-lined road just as the sun was beginning to set and stopped at the entrance to the Pittock Mansion (a Historic Oregon landmark, and an absolute dream—definitely worth a Google search). As he opened the door for me, there were rose petals and candles lining a path to Mansion's garden on the back side of the property. As I followed the trail of rose petals, it lead me to Cole, standing on the balcony overlooking the beautiful city skyline with the sun setting in front of us. I couldn't hold the tears in any longer! He took my hands, which were shaking like crazy, and proceeded to tell me how much he loved me and couldn't live without me. He expressed his dreams and desires about our future and that he truly believed every decision we made on our crazy journey together had brought us to that very moment. He read our favorite scripture from his bible and got down on one knee and proposed with my late great-grandmother's amazing Marquise diamond in a custom setting that he designed himself. After many tears and a thousand "yes’s,” my family came out and surprised me. We took pictures and popped champagne and were surrounded by so much love. It was perfect.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? My vision was classic elegance with a rustic feel. I wanted a wedding that I could look back on in 20 years and not cringe at the photos!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? We are both originally from Texas, so we wanted a venue with that 'big Texas feel,' but with a touch of glamor, and The Chandelier of Gruene fit our vision perfectly! The DJ was also really important to us because we wanted people on the dance floor all night, and Stan (CrossRoads) was the best! None of this would have been possible without our coordinator, Barbie Forester—she also did our flowers and is an absolute rockstar.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Being one of the first weddings at The Chandelier. And the flowers—I got so many compliments on my gorgeous bouquet.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? It was better than we could have ever imagined. More specifically, the venue was amazing! Myra and the team at The Chandelier are incredible, going above and beyond to make our day perfect. Also, the food was delicious, exceeding my 'wedding food' expectations!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? I would highly recommend hiring a coordinator—this made the planning process so much more enjoyable. If you're getting married in Texas, it will be hot and humid—no matter what time of year—so just go with it. Also, make a list of the things that are most important to you to have on your wedding day, and make those the priority.
ENJOY IT! Take time to really enjoy the wedding planning process with your fiancé; it is such a special, fun, exciting time, but it's easy to get wrapped up in the stress and craziness of it all. Remain rooted in love always :)
