How did you meet?
During Jade's first semester at Stephen F. Austin, she was cast in Romeo and Juliet. And so was Kevin. They didn't talk much other than the casual, "You're from San Antonio? I'm from San Antonio, too!" A few semesters later, they ended up in the same geology class. Kevin asked Jade to study with him. Together, they learned about many types of rocks and made it out with passing grades. After geology, they became friends...and the rest is history.
Tell us about the proposal
In the early stages of dating, Jade and Kevin went on an adventure around the football field, and, on an impulse, rolled down one of the hills. The day before Jade graduated, Kevin took her back to the bottom of the hill (the spot he said he first started to fall in love with her), got down on one knee, and asked the most important question (after she finished counting to 60 per his instructions)! She was so excited that she forgot to say, “yes” at first!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day?
Jade was originally inspired by the Yule Ball from Harry Potter (she’s a fan), because it was so sparkly and had such a magical feel, so that's where she started to draw her design ideas from. Eventually, it morphed into wanting rich colors that would really make it feel like a winter wedding, so she chose the midnight blue and plum, which she thought complimented each other nicely. The gold accents really added sparkle and helped make everything pop.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did?
The highest priority for Jade was finding a venue that fit her vision of getting married outside and also had a beautiful indoor location for the reception. The Club at Garden Ridge fit that bill. Kristi, the venue manager, was a huge factor in the couple’s decision. When Jade and Kevin first visited the venue for their tour, the first thing Kristi did was sit down with the couple and ask them about their story! From the very beginning, The Club at Garden Ridge went above and beyond. The couple’s coordinator, florist, caterer and bartender were chosen from the list Garden Ridge provided them with, as they came highly recommended. Jade had been following her photographer on social media for a few years and loved his work, so she was thrilled that he was free on their wedding day. The cake was from Jade’s favorite bakery in New Braunfels, and her dad's business handled the lights and ceremony sound. Jade’s dad also had a connection with a great DJ that they ended up using, which was a great decision because he was awesome!
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding?
The couple’s wedding was extremely unique in that is was a joint Baha'i and Christian ceremony. Jade loved that it brought their two religions together while also incorporating elements of their cultures. The two jumped the broom to include an African American tradition of marriage. Jade’s dad and sister are musicians, so her dad wrote a song for the bridal procession and they recorded it. Her dad played guitar and her sister played the cello—it was a beautiful, sentimental addition to the ceremony. Jade thought that their wedding cake was also unique because of its nontraditional flavor—blackberry. Another unique element was the garter toss. Their DJ spun the NFL theme song, and Kevin attached it to a football before throwing it. Jade thought that was a fun twist on a typical tradition. They also added fiber optic wands to liven up the party. They flashed fun colors on the dance floor for those who liked to dance and were a fun and unique way to include guests that didn't want to dance.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations?
The entire day was better than we could have ever imagined it. You always imagine things to be perfect, but when they actually turn out perfect, it's a beautiful actualization of your dream. The flowers/decor and the lighting really came together to make the ceremony and reception areas look absolutely stunning. Brainstorming ideas and then letting the professionals make your dream come to life is so magical and the flowers/centerpieces and lighting made the day truly beautiful.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding?
Jade advises any couple planning a wedding to start as early as they can so that they can get the vendors they want and trust—exceptional vendors make the day run smoothly. Also, it’s important to have meetings with vendors before deciding who to hire, because you can really get a feel for who they are, how they operate and if they will mesh well with your style and personality.
“Jade and Kevin are one of those couples you are going to miss when the wedding is over!” said Kristi DeBaun, venue manager at The Club at Garden Ridge. “Along with choosing their perfect venue, they put together a stellar vendor team that executed their vision and the result was a wedding day that was as amazing as the two of them.”
