How did you meet?
David and Ashley had both decided to attend a retreat at their church which included a seminar north of Houston. On the second night of the retreat, they had an ice breaker so that everyone could get to know each other. The leaders arranged the chairs in a circle, and unbeknownst to Ashley, David purposely sat next to her. The objective of the ice breaker was to get to know 5 different people and ask them what their favorite TV show was. So when the ice breaker started, Ashley immediately asked David what his was and then thought she would move on to the next person but David kept talking. They never actually completed the ice breaker or met anyone else that night, but Ashley didn't mind because she was intrigued by his questions & confidence. After that night, they didn't see each other again for 4 months and went about their normal lives back in Houston.
Tell us about the proposal:
Everyone thinks that I must have known that I would get engaged on my 30th birthday when David planned a surprise trip to go to a resort near Austin, TX for the weekend, but I had literally no idea it was going to happen! We had a trip planned to go to Thailand in January 2019 to visit my sister and I had assumed he was going to pop the question then, which is why I didn't suspect a thing. So on Saturday morning, David booked a couples massage, and then we got a massive brunch afterwards. This was followed by mini golf, lunch and walking around the resorts gardens. Then we got ready for dinner. We went to go take a couple pictures on a dock over the lake on our way to dinner and when I turned around to grab my jacket David said "Wait, let's just watch the sunset go down before dinner because we have about 20 minutes until our reservation is up." I said OK and when I turned around he was down on one knee! A total and complete surprise!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day?
I'm not really a big planner or event coordinator so my inspiration ALL came from Pinterest! I would just type in what I needed to figure out (like flowers) and then scroll until I found what I liked. Then I would show the picture to the vendors and they did an amazing job of making things look exactly like I had pictured!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did?
The venue was chosen because I wanted a destination wedding so that all our friends & family could hang out at the resort all weekend and not have to leave. Tapatio Springs has hotel rooms, golf, pools, restaurants, shuttles to town, a spa, gym and so much more so it was an easy choice to go with them! For my photographer, I chose based on their style of photos plus doing a Facetime interview with her. I wanted to make sure I really liked her so that the pictures would turn out amazing. For the cake, florist & DJ I chose based off of Yelp reviews and then interviewing them as well. The videographer & violinists were family or friends so they were the easiest vendors to choose!
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding?
Tapatio Springs is actually owned by George Strait and I got to stay in his suite the entire weekend! It was really fun to have his 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite with kitchen & living room for the entire weekend so my bridesmaids and I could get our hair and makeup done & have tons of space to hang out. Also, since my wedding was at a golf resort and everything was pretty spread out, Tapatio Springs gave my bridal party and I golf carts to ride around in all weekend which was SO fun!
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations?
I feel like EVERYTHING exceeded my expectations. The resort & their staff were incredible and so helpful. Their day of coordinator went so above and beyond and made everything so easy. The pictures from my photographer were incredible - I had so many family members ask how I found her. The floral arrangements were so beautiful - they turned out better than the Pinterest pictures I handed him and he provided so many decorations so that I didn't have to work with another vendor. I honestly don't know what I could even change! It was perfect!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding?
Book a resort like Tapatio Springs who will help you plan the wedding every step of the way and will handle all the unexpected things that will pop up(because they WILL pop up!). And then spend the extra money on a great photographer who makes you and your bridal party + family feel comfortable in front of the camera. This is SO important!
