Janae Botello & Matthew Salo
How did you meet? Living in Corpus Christi. I was attending nursing school at TAMUCC and he was attending flight school to be a pilot for the Navy. We were both studying at a local bookstore in the coffee shop. He said something corny, I laughed, and the rest is history!
Tell us about the proposal. Epic. How else would a pilot propose? He rented an open-top biplane, and as we flew over the St. Augustine beach, during a beautiful sunset, he asked me to marry him...in the air. It was breathtaking!
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? My favorite love story of all time, the movie Pearl Harbor. Like the main characters, I am a nurse and he is a pilot. My fairy tale came to life with this military/aviation theme, even down to our retro engagement pics—the nurse and the pilot in black and white!
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? Kendall Plantation was love at first sight. All other venues paled in comparison. Nothing beats the Texas Hill country. I chose my vendors obviously for their tremendous quality, but more importantly, every owner's personality. They were all so kind and brought my dream to life.
What were some unique elements from your wedding? Our retro pictures on display. Our military saber arch made a gorgeous reception entrance. My unique, self-made centerpieces that were biplanes. The groom's cake was military themed (amazing). And the color scheme (navy, white, and gold) paid homage to my husband's alma mater, the United States Naval Academy.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Everything! The cake was near and dear to my heart. Both in taste and presentation. Cynthia nailed it! Also, Limelight, the photography/video team, did such an amazing job. My bridal portraits were more than I could have ever imagined. Limelight is so creative and professional.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? I would definitely say research all your vendors—just because they are most expensive doesn't mean they are the best! Second, your pictures are the only thing you walk away with from your wedding day—it is worth it to spend a good portion of your money on the photography.
