How did the two of you meet? We met at work and became fast friends. After many years of building a solid foundation of friendship, we realized it was much more than that.
Tell us about the proposal. We always knew Sandy would be the one to propose. We get that question often—how do you decide who asks whom? Well, it was pretty obvious I needed the big engagement ring! Sandy planned ahead of time and took me out to the country and got down on one knee at our special place. Our friends have an amazing ranch and she proposed in the exact place we recommitted our love for one another a few years ago. It was absolutely perfect. Our friends surprised both of us with champagne, wine glasses, and a cake!
What three characteristics made you each fall in love with the other? Billie for Sandy—her huge heart, humor, and compassion. Sandy for Billie—her humor, her big heart she didn’t know she had, and how she has always been there for me.
What inspired the design of your wedding? We knew we wanted lots of color and we just took ideas from magazines, Pinterest, and our own ideas.
How did you decide on The Veranda and the other local vendors you chose? We researched venues online and we saw The Veranda. Immediately, I thought: I love it but we probably can’t afford it. We made appointments to see many venues during one week. The Veranda was our first stop and we absolutely fell in love with how beautiful it was and how awesome Miranda treated us. We were worried about venues/vendors not accepting same-sex marriages, yet The Veranda made us feel right at home. We only saw one other venue before we cancelled all our other appointments. The rest of our vendors were suggestions from one of my bridesmaids!
What was the most trying part of the planning process? Making sure everyone was where they needed to be at the right times. Our family is worse than herding cats!
Did either of you have a bridezilla moment? We like to call it a “meltdown” versus bridezilla moment! The flowers we ordered were completely wrong with only two days before the wedding. The rainbow colors were crucial to the theme and we got peach roses. The company immediately resolved it and overnighted new roses. Although they weren’t exactly the same, they actually worked out better than what I ordered. When I opened the box, I immediately started crying and Sandy went into get-it-fixed mode. After I calmed down a bit, I was good, and then she had her moment of crying because she was worried I wouldn’t have the perfect day. We laugh about it now.
What element of the wedding exceeded your expectations? Everything! But if we had to pick, I would say the venue and Lisa, our photographer.
What are your favorite memories from the day? The toasts! Our kids did an amazing job. The first look, first dance, and all the goofy pictures we took.
If you’d been a guest attending your wedding, how would you describe it? Lots of excitement—you could feel the connection with everyone; the food was amazing; and the party was a lot of fun. Although it was hot outside, everyone felt comfortable and loved all the little details like the custom koozies.
Besides marrying the love of your life, what was the most important part of the day? We both agree it was the vows we spoke.
What are your plans for the future? Buy a house together and convince our daughter to move here!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Pick the most important elements you want and design around those. Be realistic about your budget and make detailed itineraries the week of the wedding. Communicate when you are stressed and talk it out with your partner. For things that are really important to you and your partner, decide together and don’t feel the need to include others. Remember, this is about your love and commitment—you can’t please everyone!
