Jodie Beth Siegel & Joe Anthony Martinez
Hometowns: Beverly Hills, CA & San Antonio
How did you meet? We met during our final semester of undergrad at UTSA when we were assigned to student teach at the same elementary school. We had never seen or had class with each other during four years, until student teaching. When UTSA graduation used to be in the Convocation Center, they would hold a ticket lottery where students could win more tickets for guests to attend graduation. After arriving to the lottery, my colleagues were sitting to the right, next to an empty seat and Joe’s friends were sitting to the left, leaving an additional empty seat. Joe and I wound up sitting next to each other in those two unoccupied seats and hit it off immediately. I asked him for his number and he invited me on our first date to Fiesta 2010.
Tell us about the proposal. In 2015, Joe planned my birthday with a trip to the coast, where I thoroughly enjoy tanning and swimming while he loves to fish. However, rain was in the forecast, so he changed the plans last minute! Joe arranged for his mom to take me for a manicure and pedicure while he got all the details in order. He convinced me to join him for a weekend getaway at the JW Marriott where I was surprised to find a relaxing massage and fancy dinner awaiting our arrival. After dinner, he led me to a lighted gazebo decorated with rose petals and candles and with music playing in the background. On one knee, he asked for my hand, and without hesitation, I said, "YES!" Hotel workers came out of the bushes filming the proposal and congratulating us.
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? The antique lace design of my Maggie Sottero wedding dress combined with Kendall Plantation's aesthetic—the vintage elegance and glamour of these two elements inspired a “Gone With The Wind” effect on our wedding day.
How did you choose your venue and vendors? We chose Kendall Plantation by doing extensive research on venues and looking at pictures in various wedding magazines. Kristin provides every bride and groom with a list of preferred vendors she highly recommends so our wedding would run as smoothly as possible. We based most of our decisions off that list or decided based on budget or got recommendations from friends who were recently married. We also attended The Wedding Fair hosted at the JW Marriott to learn about other San Antonio vendors.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding?
- groom and groomsmen day-of haircuts
- two-toned Bentley getaway car
- Jewish ceremony with interfaith characteristics (sign Ketubah, breaking glass, Horah, etc.)
- butterfly release to honor deceased family members
- guests asked to sign matting of engagement photo instead of traditional sign-in book
- wishing well
- blue Badgley Mischka Kiara peep-toe pumps (something blue)
- groomsmen wearing yarmulke/favorite sports team socks
- memory table with pics from past weddings
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The abundance of guests who attended our ceremony was overwhelming, especially for it being on a Thursday. We are blessed to have such loving family and friends who seemed very interested in witnessing a different cultural/religious event.
What are your favorite memories from the day? Although the night flew by, Joe’s favorite memory was our first dance to “Every Time I Close My Eyes” by Baby Face. It’s hard to narrow it down, but my three favorite memories are walking down the aisle to Beauty and the Beast's “Tale as Old as Time,” watching our 3-year-old god-daughter Aubree tossing petals perfectly, and having Joe put on a sexy show to The Weeknd's “Earned It” as he took off and tossed my garter.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Joe: Do what pleases you and your bride versus what pleases your guests. The celebration should revolve around your union. Jodie: Review contracts you have with ALL vendors to make sure you’re agreeing to the same terms and conditions. A wedding planner could be useful with this matter in having all details of the day run smoothly.
What does the future hold for you? Joe is currently a middle school PE coach and coaches football, soccer, and track after school, and Jodie is a 5th grade bilingual teacher. We are expecting our first baby in November 2016, which means I was pregnant with our daughter on the day of our wedding!
