Allie Miles & Evin Etier
How did you meet? Evin & I initially met while I was still in high school. A few years later, when I moved home after college, our paths crossed again while I was babysitting for his sister. She invited me to a New Year's party at her house, where he and I were conveniently the only single people attending. He swears he was the mastermind behind that plan; I think his sister saw something we didn't. Either way, he swept me right off my feet and the rest is history!
Tell us about the proposal: Evin's family has a tradition of signing a tablecloth at Christmas each year, which his mom later embroiders. I love that you can see the way their family has grown from the time he and his sisters were children until now. Last Christmas, my mom told me she had asked his mom for permission to copy her idea. Evin, my sister and my step-dad all quickly grabbed a marker before I could. When Evin handed me his marker, I noticed that he had signed "Marry Christmas 2016". I turned around to scold him for using improper grammar and he was on one knee. I love the way his proposal incorporated my love for family and tradition into something we can remember year after year!
What inspired the design or theme or you wedding day? I wanted to make sure that our wedding day was laidback and fun with just the right touch of whimsical romance. I wanted it to reflect my favorite things about "us". The venue we chose made it so easy to incorporate that vintage, rustic vibe I love with the sophistication and romance that Evin brings to the table. Once we found Sisterdale, the rest of the details just naturally fell into place.
Why did you choose the venue and venodrs that you did? I knew the second I stepped onto the property at Sisterdale that it was perfect! I loved the ability to have an outdoor wedding and an indoor reception at the same location so that our guests, many of whom traveled from New Mexico, didn't have to drive all over the place. They all raved about their stay at Tapatio Springs, which was a great weekend hang out for both adults and families. We also opted for a variety of pies from Bumdoodler's in Boerne as opposed to a traditional cake, and they were such a hit that even some of the wedding party took pies to go when they left. We also chose to serve tamales from Mi Casa Tamales for the meal so we could incorporate a little bit of our New Mexico taste into our Texas wedding.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? I loved that we were able to incorporate so many personalized elements into the wedding. My great grandmother passed away shortly before the wedding, so I hand sewed a heart-shaped cutout of one of her blue shirts into my dress. My best friend and maid-of-honor owns an embroidery shop, so she put personalized notes from me to each of the mothers and grandmothers on a handkerchief. I also made the flower arrangements, invitations, ceremony programs and table centerpieces. One of my favorite parts of the day, though, was having both my dad and my step-dad walk my down the aisle. I know it wasn't easy to share that moment, but it meant the world to me to acknowledge my step-dad for the way he has loved me and raised me as his own when he didn't have to.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Everything about my wedding exceeded my expectations! Sisterdale was breathtaking, the DJ did an excellent job, the food was delicious and the guests who came made us feel so loved and celebrated. I can't say enough about the pastor who officiated our ceremony. Jeff is also our music minister and a good friend, but the way he pointed us and our guests to God so beautifully was incredible. Our photographer, Laura Ridge, did an incredible job. I cried and cried when I got the pictures back after our wedding. I remember it being a beautiful day, but she captured so many precious moments and memories of that day flawlessly! I was also really thankful she recommended Renee Green to do my hair and makeup because I have never felt so pretty! She perfectly recreated the idea I had in my head for my "wedding look", and my hair and makeup lasted through the San Antonio heat and tons of dancing.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? San Antonio is full of so many options, so don't be afraid to keep looking until you find the elements that perfectly represent your relationship.
