Sarah Perez & Joel Douglas
Hometowns: El Paso & St. Georges, Grenada
How did you meet? I work in social media and he’s a website developer; therefore, somehow we were destined to meet online. We were matched on eHarmony on 12/31/14. He lived in Dallas and in mid-January we met in person in San Antonio. Five months later, we were engaged!
Tell us about the proposal. We were in my hometown of El Paso with my family. It was a busy day filled with family activities and my grandmother's birthday dinner at night. We had a blast and I had no idea he had the ring in his wallet the whole day. He was waiting for the right moment. The dinner ended and we decided to drive to this new outdoor shopping square where they have beautiful lights at night and water fountains all around the pathways. We started walking and talking about the usual things. Then we sat down by a fountain and he got on one knee and proposed! I had no idea he was going to do it there and I loved every moment of it. He said he was waiting for people to pass by, and also told me he wanted to propose in front of my family but then got too nervous. It was perfect, just the two of us. ("Just the Two of Us" by Bill Withers was actually our first dance song—we’re old school.)
What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? This was my favorite part. I love traveling and have been to 11 countries and he’s originally from Grenada, which is a small Caribbean island. Therefore, vintage travel was my inspiration. We are both very traditional and some people call us old school, so it fit us perfectly. My sister, mom and I had fun buying all the little travel decorations and coming up with ideas for the wedding.
How did you choose your venue and vendors? The reception location was the most important! Most of our guests were coming from out of town, so we loved the Wyndham because it had a reception hall with windows facing the Riverwalk and because it's a hotel, our guests were accommodated, too—win-win. The other vendors were friends in the business (DJ, Cake, Makeup, Hair).
What was the most trying part of the planning process? Finding that perfect venue for the right price and amount of guests.
What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Embracing different cultures with our décor, guests, music and food. We love that we brought everyone together on the dance floor, after our salsa dance to the song “We Are One” by Pit Bull. As they came to the dance floor the bridal party handed out small flags of different countries around the world. Also, our cake topper was made to look like Joel and I sitting on top of the world and it ended up being one of my favorite things.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Shelly Koch at the Wyndham made everything perfect. She knew we were handling the plans on our own and was very helpful in putting the last minute touches in place like the coral napkins and uplighting.
What are your favorite memories from the day? Our beautiful and fun ceremony, having our best friends in our wedding, family in town from all over, and the horse carriage ride right after our wedding ceremony. The carriage ride together was a very special and exciting moment that I would recommend to anyone. It gave us time alone to soak it all in.
What are your plans for the future? We are both entrepreneurs with many great ideas for the future. First, we are getting settled as newlyweds, working on our social media and website bevelopment business, Full of Grace Marketing and a new business, Event Escrow. In about a year or two we hope to have little ones running around.
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? A wedding in San Antonio is nothing without the Riverwalk! Guests love it and it's a great location to take pictures. Spend most of your money on a good photographer, don’t argue about wedding plans (it’s just one day) and enjoy every moment!
