Meredith Mayes & Josh Powell
Hometowns: San Antonio
How did you meet? We both attended Churchill High School. We became close in government class our senior year and have been inseparable ever since.
Tell us about the proposal. It was a beautiful evening in December, a couple days before Christmas. We went to a lovely dinner at Cured and then went for a stroll on the river. Josh got down on one knee in front of the San Antonio Museum of Art, one of our favorite places. It was low-key and perfect!
What was the inspiration behind your theme/design? We had a couple of non-negotiables: we wanted a bohemian, vintage feel to our wedding, and we knew we wanted to get married outside. We were inspired by our venue, The Veranda, because of the beautiful garden and the gorgeous Mexican tiles. Those tiles were the inspiration for our incredible invitations designed by Tracy French. Our incredible wedding planner was able to capture our unique vision.
Why did you choose the venue and vendors you did? We fell in love with The Veranda. We loved that it was tucked away in San Antonio and that it was so close to both of our childhood homes. We also loved the openness of the space. It was very important to us that our guests be able to move throughout the night and The Veranda's layout made that possible. The different shades of green along with the glimmering lights made it the perfect place for us to say “I do.” Our photographer was AMAZING! She truly understood our vision and captured the sweetest moments. I will treasure those photos forever.
What were some of the unique details from your day? Josh wore a guayabera and I wore a flower crown. The cake table was a favorite! It meant the world to have cakes that we have grown up eating with family and friends. They were all made by some of the people we love most and having that personal touch was wonderful. The kid's cottage was another hit for our guests who had children. We hired a babysitter to watch the children in the cottage on-site. There were dress-up gowns, games, and food. The kids had a blast and all of their parents were able to enjoy the evening by our side. The guest globe was another detail we loved. Josh is a social studies teacher and loves all things maps. The globe has been an awesome addition to our new home.
Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? The whole day and night were absolutely spectacular. It was perfect, I wouldn't change a thing—except maybe the chilly weather!
What are your favorite memories from the day? The ceremony was emotional and beautiful. Looking into Josh's teary eyes as we recited our vows was my favorite memory of all time! Cocktail hour was lovely—Davis and Devin, two of our close friends, sang and we got to visit with all of our guests. The reception was an absolute ball! We had the best time dancing with friends, taking silly pictures, eating, drinking, and celebrating our love!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Tracy French, our wedding planner, was a game changer! I would definitely recommend her to any San Antonio couples. I would also tell brides and grooms to not stress the small stuff. No matter what, you are marrying your best friend, and in the end, that's all that matters.
