Ivory & Blush at Hilton Palacio

Jennifer Ann Salazar & Michael Adrian Sefton
    Hometowns: San Antonio & Dallas

How did you meet? We met about five years ago through Mike’s cousin. She and Jen are good friends and would hang out quite often. One night they called me (Mike) after a night on the town. That is where Jen and I had our first conversation and have yet to go a day without speaking since.

    Tell us about the proposal.
I had bought the ring for Jen and was holding it for about a week trying to think of the best way to propose. This was during the bulk of NBA playoffs 2014 and the Spurs where in the Finals. Jen is a die-hard Spurs fan (being that she played basketball all through school, including college) and her team was about to win the championship. Therefore, I decided: “If the Spurs win, I’m going to propose right then and there.” As you can guess, they won, and during the celebration with her family, I got down on one knee and popped the question.

What inspired the design or theme of your wedding day? Jen and I are both very simple people who like things to be very natural, fresh, and classy, so we used blush, ivory, and other soft colors for our wedding.

How did you discover Beatriz Cardona Photography and what was it like working with her? We met Beatriz through an open house event the Hilton was having that we were invited to. Working with Beatriz was like working with family. She is a very warm and welcoming person. Through the entire process, she gave us so much useful advice on what specific pictures should be taken so that we are able to go back a revisit that very moment. We love her and will recommend her to anyone we know and will continue to work with her in the future.

How did you choose Hilton Palacio del Rio and what was your experience like with that venue? We compared the Hilton to other local venues and we felt the Hilton offered a peace of mind and an elegant atmosphere for our wedding. Once we got to know Barbara and the staff, we did not feel like their clients but more like family.

How did you choose your other vendors? Throughout the wedding planning process, Jen, her mom, and the bridesmaids were attending wedding events and extravaganzas to meet local professionals of all types who would make our wedding complete. They also attended open houses for different venues and came across other wedding vendors. We then would look up reviews on the businesses we were interested in and booked them.

What was the most trying part of the planning process? The cake was the most trying part for sure. We had our Uncle Jerry who is a pastry chef make our wedding and groom's cakes. The issue was that both cakes were coming from Dallas to San Antonio. In order to have the best quality cake, they needed to be assembled the morning of the wedding. Unsure of how everything would turn out, we let Uncle Jerry do what he does best and both cakes turned out perfectly.

What were some of the most unique elements of your wedding? Our guestbook was actually not a book at all. It was a regulation-sized basketball backboard signed by all of our family members. Since Mike and I come from a background of coaching basketball together, we thought it would be the perfect element to our wedding. Another unique element of our wedding was the arrival to the Hilton. From our church ceremony, we were driven in a fully restored 1967 Nova along with six Harley Davidson motorcycle escorts who were all best friends of the bride's dad. It was an amazing experience. When the Hilton staff says: "That was the first time anyone’s ever made an entrance as remarkable as that," you know you did something right!

Did anything about your wedding exceed your expectations? Our escort from the church to the venue was one of the most memorable experiences of the day.

What are your favorite memories from the day? Seeing our wedding ballroom completely transformed from top to bottom and having photos taken of just the two of us in the room. Also, seeing each other for the first time right before I walked down the aisle was an unforgettable moment. And finally, the dances we shared with our parents.

What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio weddingThere are two things that will make your wedding planning go by so much easier as a couple. First, prioritize what your wants and needs are. Really think of the things you must have and what you could do without. And second, communicate as much as possible. Do not ever assume what the other thinks because you never know.
