Mikhala Godfrey & Lorenzo Valencia
How did you meet? Simply put, we met at my first high school job and we have been side-by-side ever since!
Tell us about the proposal. After eight years of waiting for our love to be legal, Lorenzo secretly planned a proposal for our anniversary—10/03/15.
What was the inspiration behind your theme/design? We were going for a whimsical woodland theme. I wanted the guests to feel like we were having a "mad hatter tea party" in the forest—mushrooms, woodland animals, moss, dreamy lighting, mismatched chairs. Tracy really made this an experience for all of us!
What were some of the unique details from your day? Love won! That was truly the most unique detail from the best day of my life. Aside from the joy and love that filled that entire venue, 11/19/2016 truly brought our colorful village together!
How did you find and decide on your vendors? The vendors were carefully selected! We chose La Escondida Celebration Center because they had experience in working with less conventional weddings. Candy exceeded our expectations with flying colors, making my husband comfortable from the beginning to the very end of the wedding reception when she warmed up his hands because the weather was 30 degrees that night. She doubled as the wedding coordinator. Cake Crumbs was referred to me by my bridesmaid and the mushroom cake turned out adorable and delicious! And our guests still talk about how rad the live band was—thanks to The Royal Dukes! Everything worked out magically.
Did anything about your special day exceed your expectations? Truly everything—all the little woodland details, the moss Tracy paired with perfectly whimsical lighting, the live music was a charming touch, the hot chocolate/hot cider bar was a hit, and our photographers Sarah and Josh even made the formal pictures fun (not to mention the results of the shots!). And the florals were simple, just the way I envisioned, as if we'd picked flowers straight from the forest for this woodland gathering.
What are your favorite memories? Not too long ago, my father wasn't even willing to walk me down the aisle, let alone give me away. But six months before the wedding, he had a miraculous change of heart, finally accepted Lorenzo! My father proudly walked me down the aisle and gave me away that day alongside with my mother who has been supportive from the beginning. This day was profound in more ways than one. The love and support that filled the venue that day is clearly encapsulated in the pictures.
Any advice for couples planning a San Antonio wedding? Brides: breathe! It sounds silly, but it is sound advice. Aside from that, do not be afraid to be creative when you are planning your dream wedding. Problem solving is only part of the process. It is okay to not have a perfect plan for each and every little detail, sometimes it is fun to let other people surprise you with how well they can do their job. Grooms: just hear her out when she is stressed and offer to help when you can. Best of luck, newlyweds!
