For as long as they can remember mother-daughter team of Betty Jane’s Bakeshoppe Amanda Morales and Peggy Goolsbee have always been up to their elbows in flour creating delicious, made-from-scratch yummy goodness straight out of grandma’s recipe book. This family-owned bakeshop makes everything from iced sugar cookies, warm scrumptious pies and groom's cakes, but their specialty and love is in creating custom wedding cakes—a passion they’ve pursued since childhood.
"Our recipes are truly from grandma’s kitchen," Peggy said. "My mom was Betty Jane, I’m Peggy Jane and my daughter is Amanda Jane. During the holidays and special occasions the family would get together and we would all hang out and make dishes and desserts. From that it has grown into all of this and we couldn’t be more grateful."
Having created hundreds of wedding cakes throughout the shop’s opening in the spring of 2010, Peggy and Amanda have grown accustomed to making each cake they create speak volumes of the recipient’s personality. From the traditional to the elaborate, and the simple to the sculpted cake, every piece that comes out of the bakery’s oven is a true reflection of the craftsmanship and passion that they put into creating these masterpieces.
"The cake is the centerpiece for the entire event," Peggy said. "It’s a focal point and a work of art. It should be showcased in such a way that really complements the wedding as a whole."
With more than a dozen flavors, fillings and frostings perfected over the years, Peggy and Amanda surely got the formula down for making a great tasting cake. But with their culinary background and several years of experience, they have tried, tested and tasted every unique flavor their patrons have requested with ease and just as much finesse as if it was their recipe all along.
"We are more than happy to work with a bride and groom to create any flavor cake they want. We’ve had a couple ask for a bacon with salted caramel filling for one of their tiers and it wasn’t a normal request, but it is something we embraced. We love doing things out of the box and really push our talent to its limits. It was a huge hit and the bride loved it," Amanda said.
But what makes this duo so successful it the way they’ve perfected the craft of creating beautiful works of art that are not only made completely from scratch, but that are also mouthwatering in itself.
"My favorite thing about this job is how we’re able to be creative. Peggy can be creative through new flavors and fillings she makes—finding that perfect formula for that amazing taste we are so well known for. And I can be creative through my designs. I love using different mediums and techniques to create different looks that are truly unique for that couple."
From hand-painted murals, an ombre ribbon treatment, handmade sugar flowers, and all that in between, there isn’t any challenge this mother-daughter team will not welcome with open arms.
"We have been busy every weekend every year since we’ve really took this opportunity head on. It’s great to see all our hard work turned into all this. The quality of our work is extremely important to us and you know that just by tasting our cakes," Amanda said. "But just like cakes, our customers are just as crucial to that success. We love getting to know them and being able to exceed their expectations is an amazing accomplishment."
