With a passion for photography that began decades ago, Monica Roberts seeks to capture couples’ stories rather than just their picture. Her approach is to get to know people on a personal level. When working with brides and grooms, this means getting to know their story, how they met, what they like/dislike, and what makes them unique. By doing so, she is able portray a true glimpse of the personalities in the pictures, accurately depicting their feelings and emotions during the special moments she photographs.
“I often have people tell me the people in my pictures look like they were really laughing or happy. In other words, it doesn’t look staged or forced,” says the wedding photographer. “That’s such a compliment for me because I really do pride myself in taking photos where the real, raw emotion of the moment is visible.”
As part of her process, Monica asks couples to fill out a questionnaire before their engagement session. This allows her to learn about her clients’ expectations and helps her develop a plan for bringing out the distinct qualities of their relationship. “Every couple has a story all their own, so I try to bring that story to life in the pictures. In order to do this, I use the questions to help me come up with fun games during their engagement session or other activities, like saying a prayer together if that’s something they indicate is important to them.”
Aside from the questionnaire, Monica admits she is a people person who genuinely wants to know her clients and takes the time to do so. All of her wedding packages include an engagement session, which she uses as time to get acquainted with them before the big day.
“It’s important to do an engagement session because I see it as a practice run for the wedding day,” says Monica. “I really focus on forming a relationship with them, learning what they are and aren’t comfortable with and how to best capture their personality as individuals and as a couple.”
She adds, “When the wedding arrives, they know what to expect and are already comfortable with what to do. This makes the process of taking photographs much quicker on the day of, which I find most clients appreciate because they want to get back to mingling with their guests and enjoying their party.”
Monica’s packages also include a second photographer the day of the wedding, someone professionally trained to be on hand during the event to capture different angles and other important details. “A second photographer helps me be in two places at once. I talk with my couples beforehand to make sure I capture what is most important to them, but there are still some details—like capturing as many of the guests as possible—that a second photographer can help with.”
By taking the time to form relationships with her clients, Monica has earned a reputation for stunning photography in which she is able to convey a story. When clients book her services, they not only walk away with amazing pictures, but just as importantly, they walk away having had an amazing experience.
“It’s not so much about my personal style of photography; it’s more about my approach, which is to bring out the best in my clients, to capture real moments in time—in pictures.”
