A lifelong music enthusiast, Joe Caruso has built a successful career by doing what he loves. As a pop-jazz and swing vocalist, singing is not only his profession but a passion that led him straight into the wedding industry, performing for numerous couples seeking a romantic and elegant reception.
Not the stereotypical wedding singer/variety band who simply does cover versions of popular songs, Joe delivers his own fresh, re-imagined interpretations of great American standards that have earned him a long list of admirers and extremely happy clients.
“I sing the Great American Songbook in the classic style that you’d appreciate; however, jazz is also very much about improvisation and creating in the moment,” says Joe. “No question, I pay homage to Sinatra, Bennett, and Tormé, but I also try to honor the master songsmiths and lyricists like Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, and Sammy Cahn with a performance that echoes their original compositions, all while introducing my own personal nuance."
While recognized for his contemporary take on standards, securing him the title of “The Sinatra of South Texas,” Joe is also known for his performances of love songs from various eras. “I like to keep things fresh and also be unique, so I will occasionally throw in contemporary songs that are just plain fun to sing that work for the audience. It’s about being an entertainer and infusing a little showmanship into each performance.”
As a consummate professional, Joe understands the importance of such a momentous day for couples, so he works hard to make their musical wishes come true. “I probably have more than six hours of music I could sing for you at any given moment, but I am definitely willing to learn new material for clients,” he says. “Everybody loves love, right? I’m no different. It’s such an honor to sing any song that is specifically selected by a couple for their first dance. That’s their moment. That’s magic time.”
Indeed, Joe believes it isn’t enough to just sing a song, but rather to perform it in such a way that it conveys all of the emotion captured by the song’s lyrics.
“I think that’s a key part of vocal artistry—internalizing the lyrics and studying them like a poem, even before considering the melody. Along with phrasing, this is how I try to connect people to the music and make it resonate,” Joe explains. “As a professional who strives to always be at my best, it means I am constantly working to perfect my craft, to make each performance special and memorable.”
For this reason, many of Joe's former clients attest to his quality of service, which is not surprising. He himself admits that he prides himself on exceeding the clients’ expectations from start to finish.
