Sunset Station is well known for its rich history and exquisite architecture, but the true essence of this historic landmark lies in creating lasting memories for countless wedding couples. By forging the past with the present, the restored train depot offers a setting unlike any other in San Antonio. Rich in symbolism, a couple hosting their wedding here takes the first steps toward building a future together in the very same place around which a city was built.
“It’s a pleasure to work in such a beautiful and historic place,” says Marketing Coordinator for Sunset Station Caroline Buckley. “I love discussing the venue’s history and how it was a vital hub that helped to build San Antonio into the city it is today.”
Located in the historic district of St. Paul Square, the station was built in 1902 as a stop for the famous Sunset Limited that connected San Francisco with New Orleans and San Antonio. The train station was called “The Building of 1000 Lights” because of the many electric lights that were installed during its construction.
Today, this building, also known as “The Depot” or “The Crown Jewel”, is among one of the most popular venues of choice for brides. Its fine craftsmanship includes ornate vaulted ceilings, original stained glass windows, and a grand staircase (the focal point of the room) which offers an impressive entrance into a reception for a new bride and groom.
“Brides love the The Depot’s beautiful architecture and the history behind it. It provides a unique alternative to other venues in the city,” explains Buckley. “It’s not just a ballroom; it’s a beautiful and historic place.”
Sunset Station itself is one of the largest event facilities in the city. Along with The Depot, which can accommodate up to 400 guests, the station offers over 100,000 square feet of flexible space perfect for any special occasion.
While The Depot remains the most popular choice for weddings, another favorite of brides is The Spire. Reopened in 2007, this former church structure has regained its original grandeur hosting special events for up to 300 guests. It features a picturesque entryway, stately windows, and beautiful hardwood floors.
In addition to the versatile spaces available at Sunset Station, the facility has partnered with the RK Group, a distinguished event planning company, which helps brides in all aspects of creating their perfect day. From catering to linens, flowers, and even transporation services, their event planners can do it all.
