From magnificent churches with elegant architecture to a KISS tribute band in a couple’s backyard, Reverend Peter Wohlers has seen it all. With almost a decade of experience as a wedding officiant with Custom Nuptials, Rev. Peter has travelled all over, marrying hundreds of South Texas couples.
But with his increasing popularity, and travel becoming less economical, he decided it was time to have an anchor so that San Antonio couples would be able to come to him.
“Over the years, I’ve seen a real need in San Antonio for a small venue. There are plenty of really large, really beautiful venues out there but nothing for small weddings. So I knew I was going to open a small venue for couples with less than 30 guests who are looking for the feel of a beautiful venue without the giant cost,” says Rev. Peter, owner of San Antonio’s newest wedding hotspot, The Rose Chapel.
Don’t let the name fool you though—this quaint, two-story walk-up isn’t your average wedding chapel. With its fresh cornflower-blue paint, charming white frame, and open porch with accompanying cedar lawn chairs, the venue is nothing short of home.
The chapel, which opened its doors earlier this year, welcomes guests into an intimate indoor ceremony space free of stuffiness or stiff church pews. From its exposed red brick and Edison bulbs to its beautifully-stained, exposed oak beams, the chapel elegantly fuses contemporary with the sweet southern hospitality we all know and love.
The space, which is broken off into three levels, allows couples to keep their ceremony small without sacrificing the flow of a traditional wedding.
The top level, with its gorgeous high ceilings, delicate wood-framed mirror, and rustic wrought iron vanity stool provides a quiet, concealed place to apply the finishing touches for the bride’s wedding day look.
The second level, a stage for a ceremony musician, can also serve as an indoor reception area where guests can strike a pose in the wedding day photo booth while enjoying refreshments and conversation. The chapel, which provides bar tables and fresh white linens, has multiple linen adornments available to provide a unique touch to couples’ decor.
And finally, the ground level—with seating for up to 30— is perfect for an intimate ceremony for friends and family to share in that special moment. And with a beautiful rustic wooden staircase elegantly connecting all three levels—brides have the opportunity to get that picturesque grand entrance they’ve always dreamed of.
“You come in here and you know that this is a wedding. This is not the courthouse, this is not your backyard—this is a beautiful, intimate wedding,” say Rev. Peter.
Though intimate, this venue is far from small. The property’s towering oak trees provide plenty of shade for the various outdoor spaces that are also available for the big day.
Couples can exchange their vows in the intimate patio space complete with its elegant fish pond, serene waterfall, and warm white sand or out in the open courtyard where their guests can enjoy the cool South Texas breeze.
With a deck perfect for staging musicians, an open and relaxed seating arrangement adequate for hors d'oeuvres and pleasantries, and a promising new food truck tenant, this venue provides contemporary options for couples still wanting all the bells and whistles without breaking the bank.
And if that weren’t enough, couples can order customized unity candles for their ceremony from Gene Makes Scents—a small handmade soap and candle boutique conveniently owned and operated by The Rose Chapel’s Reverend Gene Ritnour. From soaps, bath bombs, and beard oils to pre-arranged silk bouquets, the shop has everything a couple could need for the big day’s before, during, and after.
Premarital counseling services are also just a few steps away at Venus Springs, a counseling agency conveniently located on the same property. And for the couple in search of a chic in-town getaway, the Airbnb two-bedroom suite on the second floor of the property provides a unique destination with a great view of Hollywood Park.
“There are a lot of small weddings happening in this military town. And more and more, we’re seeing that millennials, techies, and others just want to be smart with their money—and here, they can do that.”
With package options ranging from $100 to $1,700, there is an option for every couple, no matter the situation. “I try to work with people the best I can. I want people to be happy,” says Rev. Peter. “I tell couples all the time ‘save your money—save it for your honeymoon.’ Come get married here—where your small wedding can still be a big deal.”
